Does advancing the timing really help?
diesel-kid, I have lost the address(#$%^computor) but diesel injection of Pittsburgh has a series of articles on adding more power to a Cummins engine. The engineer/owner says they retard the timing when adding more HP. They write of a OTR owner/operator with M11 engine running 1,000HP reliability. His story is really neatl!

I only got to take it for about a 5 mile test drive after timint it and the wind was blowing about 35 mph, head wind on the way up and tail wind on the way back. It seemed like it may have had more power but hard to tell with that kind of wind. I will let you know the next real trip I take, as far as gas mileage too.
I been driving a different vehicle since that test drive.

6660 with two 200 lb guys and a quarter tank of fuel on mine.
But anyways, Matador, what have you noticed so far with your truck and the advancing of the timing? You said that you advanced it 3 degrees from stock, what do our trucks come stock from the factory at?
I would like to know mostly have if affected mileage, hopefully I will be getting a timing kit for christmas, among other tools for the Truck, and I will be able to play around with the timing on the truck.
Also, does advancing the timing anything past 17 degrees really do anything better as far as driving the truck around unloaded all the time, for mileage, power, start up and such. Thanks.

I havent driven it more than 5 miles since timing it so I cant tell you much. I think factory is about 14.5 degrees for mine. I used the pump hole window method and simply rotated the vibration damper 3 degrees advance. Its not perfect but its dang close. You dont need any special tools the way I did it.

The effects of timing somewhat depends on the pump. The little pumps like more timing. Advanced timing will noticably increase the top end while maybe giving up a little bottom end. The sled pullers like well over 20 degrees for the best performance while running WOT down the track. However I personally would not recommend over 20 degress for a daily driver.
15.5-19 (depending on the pump, setup, and use) seems to net the best results for a daily driver.

Thanks for your thoughts Rhino. I figure mine is about 17 to 17.5 now. It is so **** cold now where I live I probably wont know for sure the effects of the bump for a while. It is anywhere from zero to minus 20, with 20 to 50 mph winds.

C'mon now that is nothing, my truck is 7100 pound with a full tank of fuel and the only load in it is me
