Is the heat shield mandatory or can I just get the BHAF and install it?

You'll be fine with just the BHAF. The heat shield is a nice addition but I don't think you will notice much of a difference with it. I have talked to a guy that has tested and tested with and without the heat shields and he says the difference is minimal. If you would like his number shoot me a pm and I'll get it for you so you can talk to him and ask him questions. He also sells them with the water cover(that blue thing on Phox's) for a pretty good price. When I do it I am not going to bother with a heat shield unless I can find someone that will do it for real cheap just because it looks nice!
