It would have been MUCH easier to stay out of this thread, but I feel a need to express concern about driving our best sources of info away by expecting or demanding more than they can/should/want to give.

I have often heard it said that CTD owners are the most interested and inquisitive diesel truck owners. This was said buy a vendor as a blessing...and a curse!

I was shocked by responses to a recent thread... about Wildcat Diesel going out of business.
Many said how they wished they had bought something from Rod after all the info they had gotten from him on the phone. I bought all my Bombs from Rod because of the education I got! I buy from Don for that reason also.

The DTR has, in my opinion, much less arguing for our own position, speech making, vendor defending and pseudo expert commenting than other sites. Much friendlier! Hope we can keep it that way.

Rambling, I guess. All I really wanted to say...is in my first sentence!

Hmmm... I wasn't aware that the MLS gasket would work on a 12v. When first mentioned I thought I read that it would not. As I am contemplating some work on the head while it is off the truck maybe I will just consider studs and an MLS gasket? I guess since it is off the truck I might as well go an cut it for O-Rings too.

O-rings wont work with the MLS style gaskets. They are embossed instead.

Surface prep is the most important thing. You will need to yank the block and get a super smooth surface on the head and block to use one.

If you are even able to find a machine shop with the proper equipment to get the RA to 30 or less.

Don,
Good advice on making the block finish as flat at possible to use the MLS gasket.
But I do not think it is a must to run one.
The factory runs them from the get go and they seal up great (everyone complains of factory surface finish on the boards!).

Justin,
You have the right parts.
Yes you will have to modify one to fit the older engine.
You are correct one or more water passages do not mirror one another from gasket to gasket.

Cutting should not be an issue with the new gasket, but maybe crimping the edges where you cut could be.

As far as I know right now there is not a MLS gasket for older B series applications.
All CR B series utilize the same MLS gasket.

Justin has the wrong part. The right part is not going to happen. At least not through us. Some other vendors may finalize the deal. I backed out. Justins stock Cummins MLS will not work. The oil holes from the block wont align with the 12 valve. The stock MLS on a 24 valve has other issues as well.

I had some ideas to get the prototypes out and on the market, but there are too many reasons not to do so. The stock 12 valve gasket and o-rings are working great on the 12 and 24 valve engine.

Like Don said, Orings are fine for what we are trying to accomplish. Heck COMP461 is running just orings. He lanches at 80 psi and see 100 psi when he is running at the strip.

BUT if the orings are screwed up, or done wrong you can always step up to fire rings.

The MLS needs to seal on a perfectly flat and smooth surface. You would have to take the block out of the truck in order to get that kind of finish.

I will still get those pictures tonight. (On edit maybe in a few weeks or a month or two )
