convert a 35 to a 40?

I am going to rebuild my turbo because the shaft has lots of play. can I buy the parts to make it a better one like an hx40 or whatever? what are the differences between them?

I had a 35/40 hybrid built by a shop, that I will leave unnamed, in north Texas. It didn't last to long, but you can get one from Peirs or have a turbo shop build one for you.

Yeah, I've been told that that 35/40 wasn't very MAJESTIC after all.

Lance, I don't know if you can buy the parts or not but I'd honestly save your money and just buy a new turbo. A 40 can be a laggy turbo and they are known to be kinda weak when used in a single application.

You have to turn the back plate out to accept a larger compressor wheel. Then you have to buy a hx40/ 6 blade wheel and cover. I have done quite a few with no issues. A good afternoon job. 4 or 5 beer job!

I had Scheid install a 35/40 when I had my engine built and have had no problems at all with it. Maxes out at about 46 psi with street cam, EZ, Blue Chip, and DDII's. It may take a second or two more maybe to spool up but when it does, look out. Not sure I'd do it myself especially when this thing spins at well over 100 grand in Rpum's.

There is more to it than just putting new parts in it, it has got to be balanced before you put it on or you won't make it a block before it scatters. The problem with going to a 35/40 hybrid is that the shaft can't handle the inertia of the bigger wheel spinning and will break at high boost or letting off the go pedal to fast. Take it to a good shop to get it done or buy a new one.

If the wheel hasn't hit the housing, I'd just go with a rebuild kit. The 35/40 isn't very cost effective IMO. If either wheel has hit the housing (and caused damage to the wheel, housing, or both) then I'd go with an S300-based turbo if you can afford it, otherwise you could step up to a cheap used HX40.

the HX40 that is STILL on my 97 was built by Dave at Majestic in Irving, TX. I beat the snot out of it running it at 42psi for 6 months or so. I turned up the fuel some more, and it hit 45psi a few times, so I turned it back down to 38ish. It's still going strong and now on its second owner after I owned it.

with that said, I wouldn't waste my time with another HX40 or any variant thereof

sorry to steal a thread but i posted last night under turbo trouble and got an answer saying to rebuild my turbo my self i would asume that it should be balanced and there are a lot of parts that need to be just right, i have a little oil in the front of the turbo housing not much a spray in the intake of the turbo and a little compressor wheel play. thinking of getting a new HX35 from piers is this a sound turbo for a litly moded truck

I've done a few without having balanced them and all are holding up fine. Mine has been run hard almost everyday for about 4 years (44 psi). I was told by HTT that you really don't have to balance it. I've heard of HX40s letting go but not really many hybrids.

just my $0.02

I kept the 12CM housing. So I only removed the center and front section from the truck leaving the exhaust housing in place. You need:
1) Access to a lathe that has a big enough chuck to mount the center section or a Bridgeport with a rotating table attachement. I think the lathe is easier.
2) About 2 hours time to remove and re-install the turbo. Getting the return oil flange to bolt on is a pain unless you have really small hands or a 5 year old around...
3) The kit did not come with a gasket for the oil return flange. Get one or you'll be making your own from gasket material.
4) I found it easier to mount the compressor housing on the turbo with it off of the truck as I have the giant expanding 'C' clip mount holding the housing on.

I found it to be a fairly easy upgrade. Note: 370s, #4 plate, 4GSK is too much for this turbo! It does get hot, but for 1/4 mile type horsing around runs it's good enough for me and it should make a decent top turbo (with an external wastegate) on a set of twins. ...someday...

Here http://www.htturbo.com/dodge.htm these guys have everything you'll need, and can answer any questions you have. Not all the upgrades reqired machining or balancing, but it is a good idea to have it balanced by a turbo shop if available. Oh and if you search google, holset has the repair manuals available for download for free.

Also FYI, all turbos are going to have radial play (up/down, side to side) The play you need to worry about is axiel play (in and out). Meaning if you grab the bolt holding the compressor on it will move some up and down, but should not move fore and aft.

I posted this afew minutes ago in another thread:

I made a hybrid out of a HX35 using the Super 40 wheel and housing. I had the wheels balanced and drilled a 9/16" hole in the 12cm exhaust housing divider to vent all the cylinders. It cools and spools great to me but I only have my old WH1C to compare it to. Since I added the boost controller I cant make it get over 1300 deg. I got my wheel and housing from Gillett Diesel and my rebuild kit and balancing from GPopShop.

so if I run a 15.6 in the 1/4 mile, what would my time improve to with a 40 compressor wheel?

also, about how much HP will it give?

also are all the rebuild kits the same quality? or should I get a specific one? what about the compressor wheels?
