Compressor Wheel Opinions

Hey fellas. Talked to the local turbo shop today. I told them I had an HX35 that I would be rebuilding myself. I priced a rebuild kit as well as an HX40 compressor wheel. He told me that there were two wheels that he was aware of. One 40 wheel can be used without milling the 35 housing out. The other is a little larger and would require milling the 35 housing out.

So, my question is. Which wheel should I go with? Will the smaller 40 wheel work well enough to provide the increased efficiency that I need? Or should I just go ahead and mill the 35 and go with the bigger 40 wheel. Anyone have a comparison of the two? Thanks in advance guys.

Monty

Re:Compressor Wheel Opinions

I'd go with the larger compressor wheel inducer. I have a 60mm inducer (HX40) on my rebuilt H1C. I got the compressor wheel housing to match it. From what I have heard there are several inducer sizes available, which come in 2mm increments. The overall size of the wheels, and the backface, are the same. If you are running higher boost #'s it wouldn't be a bad idea to get the upgraded bearings (bushings).

Mike
Re:Compressor Wheel Opinions

if you can get the info, try and locate compressor maps for both wheels....that should make the decision easier.

in general, a larger inducer diameter tells you that the wheel will move more air, and a larger exducer diameter tells you that it will make slightly more pressure.

Whatever you do, get the turbo rebalanced after it is rebuilt!

Yes, I will get it balanced. Talked to a few guys. Some say to go with the large 6 blade wheel. Others say to go with the smaller 40 wheel. I take it that the PDR version is the smaller wheel?

Re:Compressor Wheel Opinions

The rebuild kit that I got had the standard bearings. I had to get the bearings with the oil upgrade separate. I think they were $25 or so. I had to send the turbo off to be balanced. Some say that you can get away without balancing it, but that is way too risky for me. I gained about 2psi with the upgrade. I heard that PDR uses a 58mm inducer. I don’t know for sure, that is just what I was told.

Mike
from what I've been told the smaller is the same as the 35, your only going to get more if you go bigger. As far as piers, its not a holset wheel and is similar to a 40 wheel.
