Collapsed AFE

I don't think it was caused by external damage but who knows. I definitely didn't shut the hood on it and no one works on it. I just had the sock off when I installed the turbo a few weeks ago and it was fine. It does seem more than a coincidence that it's creased right on top so who knows. I'm just not sure when or what would have caused it since I haven't been under the hood other than to look since I had it apart. Am I hearing that it is not possible that it has collapsed due to intake vacuum? Thx

Another thing too is if you look at the wire mesh, it's not bent in a manner that is consistant with something smashing it. Who knows, hopefully it got smashed one way or another and I'm not going to have to deal with collapsing elements lol
Seriously doubt that you pulled enough vacuum to do that to an AFE filter. If you pulled that much vacuum, wouldnt the filter minder be maxed out??
Are you sure it didnt get wet?
Interesting.

That's definitely external damage. Your filter minder isn't even pulled down in the slightest, so there's no major restriction that could cause that. You could take it off and straighten it out... use left hand to gently bend on the pleatrs on the outside, use right hand to support pleats inside.
Sorry guys but I have seen this happen with no external damage. The AFE on my wifes truck is starting to look a little sucked down. This filter may infact have had this cause by something other than air being sucked in...but a filter will suck down. Ever see the results of a set of twins?????

duke1n,
It has been hit with the hood or something, if you notice the aluminum clamp that connets the seam in the filter is just to the left,, it isn't ever going to collapse a filter next to that aluminum strip as it adds tons of extra strength that the rest of the filter doesn't have. If it were to collapse it would be somewhere else like the bottom of the filter where the air supply is less and it will pull more etc. Plus the collapse area will be in the center of the filter where there is less structure and it is easier to bend, your area is much closer to the end of the filter in a straight line that is at an angle too. A collapse will be an oval shape with the long ends of the oval bent area going top to bottom in line with the length of the filter.

I was crushing K&N filters in my intakes easily until I switched to afe...then...the AFE started doing this. Some folks say its because of huffing the turbo...suction in and then blowing it back out...I have no proof of this.
What Mark mentioned might be a solution...put the reinforced seam underneath...where it gets less air.
I have seen several. Twins kill the K&N and AFE cones real fast.
This could be something to do with the CFM.
It would be very difficult to crush a UNI as they have a real stout stainless steel mesh inside the filter. Anything is possible though.
