chips causing other problems?

My cooworker has a diesel performance shop on the side and has been trying to sell me a chip for a couple of years. I havent bought one because I havent needed the power, and mainly because I was afraid it would speed up the lift pump/vp44 failure.

But the fuel prices have me rethinking this, everone I know who has modified their fueling has increased mpg. If it is driven sanely (hard to do I'm sure), does it increase potential for other problems?

Thanks,
Bryan

You mean added more fuel? Call me stupid but no way does your milage go up when you add more fuel. Maybe with a set of injectors that atomize the fuel better but not sure how adding more timing or pressure with a box would decrease fuel consumption. Not to mention the fact that laying off the go peddle when it's there and so much fun, is beyond most people's abilities. I know my mileage didn't go up lol.

I'm sure others that know way more than I can comment on VP44 issues, I just added a pusher pump to make sure I maintained good fuel pressure at the pump. So far no problems...

I run an Edge EZ and when cruising on the highway I can pull 20+ mpg which is about 2 mpg better than before....

blafleur: I think it's possible to gain fuel mileage by bombing the truck- but you'll either have to keep your foot out of it or go for bombs that won't gain you power.
I found that a good bit of economy can be picked up with free stuff.
Tire pressure
Valves adjusted properly
Electric and electronics contacts clean and greased (dielectric grease)
Get rid of the stuff that is driven around unnecessarily
Small block of wood under the go pedal

AlpineRAM

for me this wasn't quite enough

Ok I'll bite... I'm interested in knowing how that would happen? Can anyone explain how a box alone would increase mileage?

Say a stock truck is 200 HP.

For this argument lets say you needed all 200 horses to get the truck moving.

To get the truck moving on your daily rounds, you'd have to floor it everywhere you went,
really sucking down the fuel.

Increase the HP to 400, doubling it.

Now, you only need half the go pedal to get the truck moving on your daily rounds.

Less pedal = less fuel, right?

Simple explanation, but sorta makes sense in a weird way.

As far as the mileage gains seen by the EZ users, could be as simple as the EZ's timing curve utilizes the available fuel better.

I'll buy the second point but not the first. Less peddle on 400hp fueling does not equal less fuel than 200 fueling level.

it's pretty simple, the EZ reshapes the power curve. The EZ changes the fueling and the timing within Bosch specs.... It brings the low end on sooner and sustains it through a larger RPM range. When cruising, you get a more complete burn from the timing advance... you still can't be hotrodding down the road at 85 mph and expect to pull those kind of numbers.

I'll be the first to say that when I'm driving around town, I don't get 20 mpg.... but I leave a cloud everywhere I go...
