Cargo Lights

Any one ever added a switch in line with the cargo lights too turn the power on rather than turning the dial on the dimmer because some times I am hooking up too a trailer in the dark and don't like having the dome lights up too be able too use the cargo light. I would like too do this so I don't have too turn the dome lights on to use the cargo light. I have a fsm and I am looking at the wiring diagram for the cargo lights but don't got a clue were too add the switch and do I need to run another fused power leg too the switch?

Since the cargo light is low amperage, you should be able to wire in a toggle switch from a convenient voltage feed (such as from the fuse panel behind the access panel on the driver's side of the dashboard, visible when the door is open) directly to the power wire for the cargo light - should be under the driver's side A-Pillar trim, especially if you have the sliding rear window.

Since the OEM light switch won't be turned to a different position, there shouldn't be any voltage backfeed to illuminate the dome light. Just to make sure, you could jump a wire from the 12+ source to the cargo light feed before you install the toggle.

Hey thanks so I need too run a power source too the switch then a leg spliced too the cargo lights correct? I have my fsm but these things are code too figure out on the wiring stuff. How do I determine which wire is the right wire by looking at my fsm.

*edit*

After following page numbers from the wiring diagram on the splices I found one I aint looked at yet and I see this on the main splice wire that leads off the cargos. PK=pink wire correct?

Just take a minute to pull the cargo lamp assembly and ascertain the color-coding.

I have my cargo light wired to come on with the reverse lights and I have a seperate switch to turn them both on without putting the shift lever in reverse. It took some creative wiring and a switching relay because the cargo light is a ground switch system and the reverse lights are a hot switched system.

What about getting a back-up light kit? Seems like it would give you more light than the cargo light?

run a hot wire to a toggle switch and cut the pink wire. run that to th other side of the switch. If you come thru GA sometime look me up and I can wire it in about 15 minutes.

There is a post on this site that tells how to switch the wires on the dash switch. Cargo lights come on first and then the dome. Do a search to find it.
