cant get boost guage to work
cant get boost guage to work
Friday night I installed my guages.
Westach is the brand. I installed:
Fuel Pressure & the EGT/Boost combo guage.
Fuel Pressure works fine.
14 PSI @ idle
11 PSI @ cruise, 65mph
7 PSI @ wot
Problem.. I cant get my Boost guage to register. ( I havent tapped the manifold yet, so my thermocouple is just hanging aboove the trubo.) Everything is hooked up per instructions. The boost tube is not obstructed anywhere. I pulled the guage out of the pod, and pulled the tube off the back of the guage, and it has pressure bowing out of it. so i know the boost pressure is making it to the guage. I know the guage has power because the light comes on in the guage, and im getting power for the lights off the guage power line. Any ideas?
ps, will the egt guage show ambient underhood temp? or is the number too low to register?
other than that, all is good. I also installed hi-flow banjos just for kicks.

Re:cant get boost guage to work
I thought the same when I installed my boost gauge.
It's hard to build enough boost standing still to make it move.
Get on the road under load and it started indicating boost.
Underhood temps probably won't be high enough to make the Pyro register, unless your in Death Valley in August towing heavy with the AC on.

Re:cant get boost guage to work
I have driven to work this morning, and to town the day before. It still isnt registering.
I dunno if it makes a difference, but I bought the combo guage over a year ago. It has been sitting in my closet in a box every since then. never been used.

U probably kinked the line somewhere so the air will not flow to the gauge.

If you read the beginning of my post, you will see that this has been ruled out.

The thermocouple is the "sender" for the Pyrometer and is plumbed into the exhaust stream.
The boost gauge hooks up to the intake system.

Hey Kid,
I think you properly diagnosed and answered your own question. You have boost at the gauge, you have power. By now you've tapped on it several times while making a good amount of boost, and it still doesn't work.
It's been sitting for a long while.
It's either really, really stuck (probably), or it's no good.
Have fun.

EDIT: Once the truck starts rolling the underhood temp is very close to the ambient temps, but yes, the T-couple will read, but you probably won't be able to tell too much, unless it's actually laying on the manifold, then you might see 200-300*.

Re:cant get boost guage to work
Thanks Merrick. Thats what I was thinking. After work yetsterday I tapped till my finger hurt!
This guage has never been used before. I bought it new with intentions of putting on my '97. But I never did. So it just sat in top of my clost.
When I get home from work today, I am going to get my heat gun out, and hold it on the thermocouple to make sure it is registering. That gun should get the temp up high enough to get a reading.
XLR8ER, sorry for confusing you. The guage is a Westach combo EGTBOOST. I havent hooked up the the thermocouple yet, thats what is hanging. the boost is all hooked up, and tapped into the 3/4" plug beside the fuel filter.
I honestly think the boost guage is stuck. Ive got pressure and power to the guage, but it wont register. and every time i tap on it, it jumps and falls back to zero. Is there any way to un-stick it? Maybe I should just call Geno's & Westach and see what can be done.
Thanks for all replys.

Re:cant get boost guage to work
Its ok KATOOM, seems like we get that eveynow and then!well, after tapping the gauge till my fingers bled, I gave up. I just called Geno's help line, and explained it to the guy. He said that there is a transducer inside the guage that sometimes goes bad. He is sending me a new gauge under warranty, and thats that. Ill intsall it and post my findings a soon as it gets here.
thanks for all the help guys, and a big thanks to Geno's for standing behind the products they sell!
