building my own trans
I've heard those books are pretty good. I have the FSM for mine and after reading it, I believe that's all that I will need.
I've had no luck finding a core, so I will probably end up having to take the truck out of service while I do the rebuild.

especially after the Smarty arrives.
Looking on ebay, think this will help any? Tranny book

Those books are a good source of info, but I like the FSM, a lot more info. I don't think the ATSG has ALL the info.
what brought this on?? i have been keeping up with this thread form the get go and i do know the one section got a bit heated, but you took care of that. i belive this is one of the best tranny threads that has ever been on the boards. there is more info on this thread that can truly help people learn that it would really be a shame to get it axed.
?????????????
Maybe Larry saw the reference above to the ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service Group) publication and the statement that it does not contain all the information that the Factory Service Manual does and mistook ATSG as a typo for ATS. I could see how that might be mistakenly perceived as a poke in the eye to one of the tranny vendors.

So how is it holding up??
I am gonna go out on a limb here with hopes of not being chastized; but you can look for a 1996-2003 47 RE, there are a couple of pitfalls with this:
1st the thermister for the "overtemp" changed in I THINK 2001, which means that if you get an earlier tranny you have to keep the 2001 sensors with the 2001 trucks. The 96-00 truck had a 1000 ohm resistor and the 2001-up had a 2000 ohm unit. I found this one out the hard way, I installed a 2001 tranny in a 1996 truck, it worked awsome for 10 minutes, then the TC unlocked and I lost OD
The tranny temp light on the dash pops on, but my tranny gauge said 130*, so I start looking for kinks in the lines, etc, etc. Then I sit back and "replay" what I had done, ahh, a dim light bulb goes off, I remembered reading about the ohm readings on these in my FSM!! I drop the VB change out the electronics, and she rocks now!!
2nd possible issue, I had no problems, but it might exist, the electronic governor "MIGHT" be different, so keep all of your electronics "year specific" and you should be OK. I was.
Another thought, The V-10 trucks have the same bolt pattern and will bolt right into our trucks, I have not done this swap yet but I have one of these to go into my old crew cab. This tranny should work with a few mods or "parts swaps" The T/C's will not work in a diesel due to the intended RPM range differences, the pump might be different, as I would bet the governor is also. I have to pull apart a diesel and V-10 unit one of these days and measure everything, but you could investigate this more. It would give a lot more options when hunting.
I would start to look outside your area, I have shipped these in from all over the country for about 100-150 bucks. Not having to "rush the job" is always worth a little coin to me!
Big Blue, I'll take your core no matter how bad it is!!
I don't think you can break EVERYTHING!!
