Boost !

Hi Guys
I have had my 1996 12 valve for almost a year and love the cummins ...I did the exhaust and full flowing air cleaner and thats about for the mods .

The truck runs perfect ...it could use a little more pep but my question is about the boost .

The most boost I have seen on my gauge is 9 lbs ...I grabed the waste gate rod to see if it moves ..in case it's stuck ...it dose not move .

Can anyone explane how the waste gate is suppose to operate and is this normal boost for a stock 12 valve .

Whats the hose that gose to the waste gate do ?

All the boots are new ...I have no boost leaks .

Thanks Guys

Greg

That boost number is definitely too low, unless you drive like a granny

Max boost should be somewhere around 20psi. You could try plugging the line to the wastegate (I guess a spent .22 shell works well) to see if that helps, or you could wire the wastegate shut and you should see better numbers.

Yes, you should be within a few lbs, one way or the other, of 20 psi.
To check the wastegate, use an air compressor, only let it run to about 20-30 psi, and a blow gun. Pull the wastegate line off the turbo outlet (you may need to pull the plastic turbo inlet elbow to get access) slowly pressurize the line with the blow gun and watch the wastegate. It should move an 1-1/2 or so.
On mine, the AFC line had a bad connection. Check the fittings at the plastic line from the intake manifold to the AFC housing. Pull them apart and check the ferrules, thats where mine was bad. Couldn't see it without removing the fittings.

I used a pair of line crimping plyer's and cut the flow off to the waste gate ...The numbers jumped right up ...I hit 20psi .

Should I wire the wastegate and disconect the hose and plug everything ... or should I put a inline control valve ...it seems that the wastegate is dumping too soon !

Thanks
