Bombing a 1990

I got a 90 cummins and I want to build into a serious fulltime pulling truck. Can't spend ten's of thousands but want to do it right the first time. Thinking my goal is 500-600 HP but more if possible. Mechanically inclined but never bombed a cummins before so just wanted input on the most bang for the buck so I don't have to redo everything in six months for more power. Thanks

Getting that kind of HP out of a first gen to hard to do, but not impossible. It'll take a lot of money to get to attain that much HP. A p-pumped 12V would be easier to make that high of HP. I don't have a 1st gen, but if you search the forum you can find many free mods. Some mods to start out would be getting some injectors and more air. Sorry I can't help out more.

You will need twins or a big single (sp66 or so), big injectors, exhaust, intake, KTA pump, probably headstuds/o-rings/both, and either a clutch or a built tranny, depending on if it's an auto or manual. It will be pricey to do it right. Member "Stomp" is (was) running around 640, so you may want to talk to him.

What would it take to switch from the v-pump to the p-pump? I may just switch it. If possible

Timing case, cover, pump gear, injection pump, lines, supply pump.. basically you would need to find a donor engine and get all the parts associated with the injection pump and fuel system. Not the cheapest, but do-able. If it's a full time puller, without a doubt, p-pump it if you want to be competitive.

INTERCOOLER or forget a puller. it will be fast for short blasts but you will need to cool the charge air to maintain high HP.MY 90 is a blast to drive but forget towing with out the intercooler.my .02
