On board air?

My dad is wondering about putting onboard air on his 24v flatbed. It is his farm truck and there is always some equipment/tire that needs to be fixed. What size compresser would you recomend to air up small tires and posibally run a small impact gun if possible. Also what brand would you recomend quick air ect. Also are they faily easy to hook up?

A home made unit can be made from a York compressor normally found in older Volvo's. Put in a 5 gal storage tank and you can run your impact tools all day long. Do a search on the 4x4 boards for OBA or onboard air. There are tons of posts of people doing this. I've never personally seen a york on a diesel but where there's a will there's a way.

I just installed the Kilby system using a junkyard York compressor off an 82 Volvo. Works great for pumping tires and running the impact wrench. Get the Kilby filter to keep the oil out of your tires.

My experience with this is on Broncos not Cummins engines. Most have made there own brackets but these were on older broncos that they just gutted the old AC pump, grind here cut there kinda thing. there are places on the net you can get brackets made but I'd look at a local metal shop.

I have a buddy that installed a PTO gear on his 6 spd tranny and put in the york under the bed. Piped it to a 10 gallon tank and and then put quick connects front and rear for accessories. The compressor intake is piped to the intake filter housing so it is getting filtered air to the compressor. He also uses it for his air bags on rear(all controlled from inside of cab). It is a pretty sweet set up. He told me the total install cost about $900 with all the fittings and such. The most expensive part was the PTO gear.

I have the Kilby On-Board Air on my 2001.5 It works great. I have a kicker that I can turn on to speed up the engine when the compressor is pumping. I have used a die grinder to clean off a broken braket on a race car, and grind down the welds, pump tires up, change tires with the impact and remount wheels and tires. I have a 5 gallon tank, air horn, and dual auto leveling valves on my air bags. Next to the EZ it is the best thing I put on the truck.

Same here only on my 02.5. It is one of the most used accessories on my truck. Get a compressor at the junkyard for 75bucks at the most, get the mounting brackets from Kilby, build your own tank, get some fittings, and do a little wiring and you can have a very good setup. Pretty easy and well worth it. Better than any electrical setup out there.
