Here are some pics of it installed in my truck. Can I get away with it being 3 inches away from my exhaust turbo? Anyone else running it like this or is there a better way?

 

I couldn't tell from the pics... but do you have a heat guard/shield? or is that what you're asking about?

I would definitely get a heat shield on there... there's pics on here showing what happens without... i would hate to mess up a perfectly good air filter by not adding a shield... get the template, get some sheet metal & shears from hardware store, and make a shield... i also used some high temp black paint & painted mine

 

That was my next question if it was gonna meltdown on me, ill get a heat shield in there with some high temp flat black.

 

I think it will be just fine, but it might get soft on a hot day if you're towing heavy.

If you're towing really hard in hot weather, the fan clutch will be almost totally locked up, and there's a LOT of airflow under the hood-- I don't think the BHAF is in any real danger.

I ran mine with no heatshield for a year with no problems at all.

Picture of BHAF and a dirty Holset HX35 from 170k on stock filters. There are pits on the leading edges of the compressor wheel and a nice layer of dust inside. Anything to be worried about?

 

I ran mine for at least a year without a heat shield..... It never got hot or had any problems... Of course it was not getting pure cold air like the stock intake was, so there may have been a performance deficit. Now I have the heat shield that is listed here on DTR and it seems to be fine.

 

I had it with and without the heat shield. Honestly on the performance side, there wasn't much if any of a difference. I never really thought about it that much though. I was more worried about sucking all the hot air in the intake, not it melting. I too built my heat shield off the template on this site, made it really easy

 

I searched last night for the template but couldn't find it, i guess ill wing it. Found the template in FAQ, can't open it... oh well

I need a fuel plate now that I got a little more air coming in. Its an improvement in flow and filtration over the stock filter, heat shield or not..

 

Make up a heat shield for it. It's not going to hurt it.
