Great information so far. My question is since DTT doesn't use lockup as much as ATS, do you have problems with it getting too hot when towing? I also assume that you are able to lockup the transmission in 2nd or 3rd with their (DTT's) controller correct?

No to heat, yes to lockup questions. I don't think there are many regular folks out there that use lockup a much or as hard as I do and I've never had one problem with it....period!

Re:BEST TORQUE CONVERTER FOR 48RE WITH 500 HP IN FRONT
ok maybe this will help you guys....this is pretty funny to me but some of you guys will call me a fool or other things :-[.
truth is i do NOT tow at all with this truck. i just have it because i wanted to try out diesels. i love how they are bottom line. i wanted one so i got it, i dont care if i payed xxxx amount of cash for the diesel, this is what i weanted this is what i got.
with this said, maybe it might change your opinion on what tc id want, all i care about is maybe beating those 4000 pound mustang svt's. p.s. i have a 1000 dollar bet with my next door neighbor that my truck will outrun his mustang svt. with my calculations my truck weighs 5953 in order to beat his mustang which has a 1/4 mile time of 13.7 i need about i need about 475 rwhp to beat him by .2 seconds. he has a manual and is a good speed shifter his times are always within .3. id like 500 rwhp.
ok guys gotta get back to work! :-X

Re:BEST TORQUE CONVERTER FOR 48RE WITH 500 HP IN FRONT
I saw first hand what an ATS tranny did towing, with a LONG car hauler in the hot and humid Texas sun. It got so hot at one point that we had to pull it into a "self-do" car wash, and spray the tranny cooler with water during one of our fuel stops.
We all had to chuckle about it.
Perhaps there was something else wrong with that truck/tranny, not sure about that, just know what I witnesed.

xcumminsx,
500 hp will get you to the 13.5 you're looking for.
TxDieselKid,
My dad's ATS tranny did nothing like that while hauling a similar load from NC to Indiana this summer. Temps never even got close to 180 on the gauge (hot line)

I'm assuming that by the weight of your buddies SVT Cobra that it is an 03. Those things will run 12.5's in the 1/4 without a sweat (if you can get traction). If he grabs traction off the line, and doesn't smoke the 1-2 and 2-3 shift, he's gone. Even the convertibles will run 12.7's with ease. I'd say to guarantee that you beat him, even if he grabs traction, 550+ rwhp. You may also be able to beat him if you catch the light just right. If you can take him off the line and get your turbo spooled up as quick as possible, you might have a chance to beat him. He'll lose boost during shifts. You won't.

TDK,
Are you talking about Merricks truck? The one that he has broken all those parts on? If so that I don't need to say anything else. :-X

Lockup works.
As mentioned before by one of the premier DTT users.
The ATS Triplelok converter is one tough converter, in my opinion the toughest.
The ATS transmission is used by many drag racers and sled pullers (with success!), ATS is not only in the Dodge trannies but also are big among the Duramax/Allison users.
TDK---How much power you puttin to the ground these days?
I am putting 500+hp (soon to be alot more )to the ground and I abuse my truck and tranny on a daily basis.
My ATS stage 4 is one tough tranny.

I think that even though the tranny is a major factor in bombing that IMHO both trannies will do their job on the dragstrip. AFAIK all three big vendors have their product installed in nearly identically performing trucks.
This said, I'd like to point out a factor that seems to be underestimated in these threads. The installer.
If you choose one of the packages I strongly suggest that you go and have a look at the installer first. Even the best product can be set up wrong and give you problems and low performance. Lots of the installers errors will surface after some time or mileage. Since I suppose you want to use the truck a little longer than a quarter mile this is something to look at.
I do not favour one or the other of the aftermarket tranny companies, but I can report on my personal experience with DTT which was excellent. The guy I reached at ATS was somewhat less on my wavelength. Another major factor for me was that DTT had experience in exporting stuff to Europe. (Not necessarily a point for you ;D )
Since you will need lots of horsepower to the ground to reach your goal I'd think that the hp department is somewhat more of an issue. And the factor to bring the power to the ground means that you will have to choose the right tires and do a lot of training on boost launches etc.

p.s. i may run propane and nos ;D

I used to run both propane and nos.
IMO Don't waste your money on propane, it likes to ruin head gaskets when being used for raceing. This was a lesson I learned twice. (Yes I was oring'd too.) And the look on your neighbors face when the 6cylinder diesel beats him... priceless!
