Shorter rod= more boost.
When rod extends, it opens a flapper valve, about the size of a thick quarter, that allows exhaust to bypass the turbine wheel in the housing and go straight down the exhaust pipe.
So if you shorten the rod, it keeps this puck closed longer and allows the turbine to be driven harder which translates to more shaft horse power which translates to more compressor speed and ultimately more boost pressure.
