BD twins

I have heard a lot of different numbers on how much HP the BD twins can support, anywhere from 500HP at 50psi to 700hp at 70psi. So my question is how much power can they support?

I am after 600hp and if the BD’s won’t support it then will a S400 under a HX40/35?

Talk to rjohnson. He's running the BD twins and at 65psi he's doing 628hp with 1300* EGT's.

I don't really see me needing 600hp to get anything i haul moving so hot towing doesn't really bother me. Thanks for the replys guys i'll shoot Rjohnson a pm here in a min.

Their official stance is 550 hp, but given proper fueling mods more is acheivable. There is a thread where BD says they have truck running 700 with nitrous I belive on them. Given rjohnson's truck is well over 600, I don't see why this is not acheivable.

Not sure what you are saying here? These twins are designed for towing and stay very, very cool. I used to see nothing over 1250 with pretty heavy fuel. I'm just now seeing more egt, but with a lot more fuel now. Towing has never been an issue with them though. You should turn you boxes down though based on you egt gauge.

i completly agree. Your egt's can be controlled by your foot and mananging your boxes.

If their rated for 550, and he wants 600, all im saying is that it might get too hot if you tow. (and when i say tow, i dont mean 5-7k. More like 15-20 TON, because thats what i usually pull) Yes, ive herd these are very good towing twins. And im sure they are. But if you tow with 600 hp they might get hot.

And its going to be hard to get a set of towable(meaning little lag) twins that will let you pull heavy at 600 hp with 30k to 40k on your trailer.

Agreed. Not sure how you'd tow with 600 hp for extended periods. Maybe for 15 seconds down a dirt track with a sled in tow, but not towing heavy down the highway at that hp for very long. If I had to guess I'm towing at 350-400 hp with my box set up. I can tow my 15k 80mph if I want to at the lower box settings and I wouldn't have to slow down for hills, etc.

yessir.

i plan on building my set of sps 62 - b2/s400 twins. This should give me about 450-500 towable hp. (turn it down a hair if she gets too hot)

and acually this will spool pretty impressively. It wont be any slower than just the 62 by itself, and this sps spools QUICK! Throw another turbo into the mix and ive got 70-80 psi. i can't wait!

Good luck towing at 500hp...your radiator will get mad at you around 450 towing the weights you and I do Blackdiesel.

Heck with what you pull, 400hp might be pushing it as much wind as those loads catch!

I don't know anybody towing 20,000 lbs with 600 HP? My bet would be it's almost impossible... EGT wise?
I have not towed anything heavy since getting BD's twins so I can't comment on that.... but a 9,000 lbs, on a 100* day, I have no EGT problems at around 500 HP! But that's also at sea level and in the 'flatlands'

Have you guys tried the Cummins 180* T-Stat? It really does make a BIG difference! May not eliminate the problems... towing 20,000 + lbs.... but I bet it will come close!

That would work for Blackdiesel...but there is only one Thermostat for 12v's...and most of them still fluctuate pretty bad!

I know I love my 180* t-stat in my truck. It doesn't budge off of 180* unless I'm at WOT.

the most i tow with this truck would be 16,000#'s MAX but between 9,000 and 12,000 weekly. The more i hear about these bd's the better they sound! I wouldn't have to tinker with them to get them right nearly as much as building my own, correct?
