Auto Meter Pyrometer Problem

Yesterday my EGT gauge stuck on 300º while parked, and when I started it back up it stayed there. Flicking it with my fingernail made it drop back to 250, but it don't look good.

This morning, I pulled the sensor out of the exhaust manifold, and was surprised.......after 115,000 miles, I wiped it off and it looks new. So, I assume the problem is in the gauge.

I followed the cable from the sender to where it goes thru the dash, and it all looks 1 piece. Without pulling the doorpost gauge holder off to see, can that gauge be replaced by itself, or does the gauge, cable and sender all come as a unit ??

That doorpost gauge holder is held on to the frame with 6 little plastic "rivets." Can they be removed without breaking them ?? Thanks Lar.

P.S. Sorry if this's been discussed before. I did a search for "Auto Meter EGT gauges," and came up with nada.

Your guages are not wired correctly. I have seen this exact problem before. Did a shop do the install for you? If so, chances are they took the easy way out. If you did the install, how did you tie in the hot 12V wiring? Also how did you wire your illumination lighting for the guages? If the illumination is not wired to a hot for the ignition switch where the lights turn on and off with the key or if it is not wired directly to the headlamp switch, you may see problems. Also, if your power for the guage is tied under a fuse or if it is not tied to a reliable or correct hot, there is your culprit. A bad ground may also be the culprit. Check all this and if you have anymore questions PM me. I have fixed a lot of guage wiring for buddies who did incorrect shadetree installs.

You nailed it. Thanks very much. Almost, anyway - all the fuses were good, and all were tight, so I ripped 3 of those &^$^& plastic rivets out and pulled the gauge holder away from the doorpost enuf to reach in there and wiggle the wires. Right away the gauge started working. I'm not going to take it all the way out to fix it right until I can find replacement rivets. Only 1 out of 3 survived.

The gauges were installed by the dealer when I bought the truck new in '02. So far, this is the 2nd glitch I've found in all those miles, many of them on rough roads. The 1st was inadequate wiring and connectors on the air compressor for the air bags. Lar.
