need help guys, 1st diesel owned here.....!!!
Hey there,Glad I found this site first of all and thanks ahead of time for your help with a newbie.I have a 2002 4x4 quad cab 24v,high output cummins
and I need help. What can I do to get more power and fuel mileage?I tow a 5th wheel so I need more towing but want it to sound awesome also,What does all the mods do?I want to get it louder like maybe a straight pipe?I have already installed a k&n filter but no box mod.any help from the pros on here would be appreciated..In turn I will let you know how it all works, remember I am on a budget ,,,lol, thanks

Welcome to the site! You will find this site one of the friendliest and full of people willing to offer very thorough advice.
I am not performance expert but I think there are two widely recommended mild performance mods: Edge EZ and Smarty that people really like for towing. Mild set of injectors in combination with the above fueling mods seem to produce nice towing power and little smoke, and fuel economy is either improved or at least not worse than stock. Also, most people think straight pipes are great power improvement, but also they add to the noise a lot.

Welcome to the site. First you need to get a fuel pressure gauge to moniter you pressure going to your injection pump. Why you ask? Well the truck can run with little to no pressure just fine, but there's no fuel returning to the tank, and that's the fuel that cools the pumps elecrontics, and when they over heat and short out you have to replace the pump at $1100 plus labor. So a gauge can save your pump, but it is the weak spot on the 2nd gen 24v'ers and are prone to fail. As for a chip the smarty is a good programer. Its good for about 65 ponys and great throttle respose. for more power there's the edge comp good for around 120 hp. BUT there are lots of boxes out there. Some can be stacked for more power.
lose the muffler, keep the resonator.straight pipe will drone you to death towing....lose the silencer ring in the turbo and drill you some holes in the bottem of the airbox.turnbuckle the wastegate shut...edge ezs and smartys are nice, but you can get brand new diablo pucks, that do the same thing as an ez,for 165 bucks with free shipping.if you want a little more yet, without breaking the bank,a set of 275 sticks play really nice with a puck........and of course,as has been said, get guages....at the very least, get an a/c hose, guage and check your lift pump pressure.............this set-up will get you an honest 18 mpg.....................bama
upgrades,
ok,sorry but I am knew to diesel..????Puck??sticks,I am guessing this is injectors?..Site to get some these items?.Thanks for the help so far, you guys are really a great help and I look forward to talking and maybe helping others when I learn it all,lol..thanks again
pipes
straight pipes add more power?I love the sound and want all I can get cheaply for now, just bought it and wife says do cheap things first..lol..Can I do that myself or does the muffler shop have to do it and should I add something else.cut the bottom of the air box just now so dont know about that yet..Thanks for the help
"Puck" is an electronic box that changes the way your ECM (engine control module) commands the injection pump (VP44, aka IP) how much fuel to inject and when. Aka a "box". "Sticks" are injectors. 275 sticks are the type of Bosch injector used in RVs that use the same Cummins engine.
There is a lot of jargon. You will get used to it

If you just got it, start with a pressure gauge. When I got my truck the lift pum was dead, and I drove around with no fuel pressure. My IP is now dead. There is a mode of failure of the injection pump, when there is not enough fuel delivered to it by the LP. The timing piston starts shuddering and works itself loose in its bore, and fuel gets around it. Eventually the timing can not be maintained, and you get DTC (diagnostic trouble code) P0216. Once you get it, you drive on borrowed time. This is what I am doing right now, my VP44 is on order.
Install a pressure gauge to monitor the LP pressure. It should be around 10 psi at idle and not less than 5 psi at wide open throttle, under load.
