Aluminized vs. stainless.......

Getting a 4" for my truck, just not sure if it's worth the 300+ difference by going with stainless. I plan on keeping this truck for atleast 10 years. I live in a mountain town where they dump salt every now and then, but I'm not made of money. Is it really worth going with stainless?
?

10 years go with stainless if you were on like say a 4 year plan or something alumanized is fine. Stainless will out live your truck.

Re:Aluminized vs. stainless.......

If it were me I would pay the extra and go for the SS. Cheaper in the long run.

Re:Aluminized vs. stainless.......

If anyone wants to spltit the difference with me, le me know ;D. $489 vs. $789..pretty steep. That's more than my truck payment. :'(
What's the stocker made of? The $$ is what's holding me back with the stainless. What's the life-span on the aluminzed?

PADZZ -

You answered your own question..You're keeping the truck 10 yrs or more..Aluminized are what is on the cars around you with the holes in the mufflers from the snow & salt..Add high temps from diesel exhaust, and you'd be lucky to get 5 yrs out of it. Then you would be spending that 489.00 again. Do it right the first time..Get the ss..

You're welcomw ;D

Is there anything that can be done to lengthen the life of an aluminized system? I think I'm going to go aluminized AND get the Scotty III for less money than just the stainless. 800 bones is too much for my pocket. When I told the wife $800 she went silent....that means no. She makes more money than I do so I guess I can't argue :'(.

Re:Aluminized vs. stainless.......

Something I did years ago that helped to prolong the life of my exhaust system was to periodically crawl underneath, clean the exhaust and paint (using a paintbrush) the entire system with high temp aluminum paint. Didn't do much for the muffler because it rusted from the inside out. Of course, for the first few miles it really stunk!!
As for sound, had a Jaguar many years which I converted to dual exhaust. Lived near a mill that was retubing a boiler and they were throwing out a whole bunch of 2 inch brass pipes. Got my hands on some of those pipes. The used them from front to back with two Massey-Fergusen mufflers. Man, did that car ever sound great with a really unique sound.

Re:Aluminized vs. stainless.......

I could be off base here, so take this for what it's worth. I believe that exhaust systems "rot" more so from within rather than from external elements. If price difference is an issue to you ,the type of driving you do should dictate the material you choose, ie stainless vs aluminumized steel. Drive times that heat the exhaust system enough to clear it from moisture will give longest life. Take it from someone who lives deep in the "salt belt". A steel system can give years of life provided your driving habits give it ample time to warm up.

Re:Aluminized vs. stainless.......

For what it's worth, I had a complete aluminized dual exhaust installed on my last truck (gas chevy) in '93 when I bought it. Both mufflers had a 1/8" hole drilled on the bottom at the back to let out the moisture. It was still tight and sound when I sold it last year. There's a lot to be said for warming them up good as Commatose said.

Re:Aluminized vs. stainless.......

Considering the price of some of the stainless vs aluminized you could swap the aluminized twice in some cases. Myself I would rather enjoy what I percieve to be a better exhaust tone and pay what in the end will be at most a couple of hundred more overall for having to do the exhaust a second time.
