Air Bags in the Rear????

First to give you an idea of what I am hauling take a look at this thread: Pull Report

So the rear axle is weighing in at about 7,140#'s

With that the suspension obviously gets a little stiff, between that and the shock coming in from the trailer the bumps get a little rough.

So I was wondering how the air bags work, do you keep all your springs as in and just install the bags or what? Will it make the ride better and how much? Just diging for info and ideas here, I don't think I am overloading the rear suspension to where I would damage it, but a nicer ride wouldn't hurt.

Take a look at AirRide Tech. We hae air bags in the back of the Excursion they really help in towing. Click on AirRide

SD03

Re:Air Bags in the Rear????

I removed my helper springs (but kept the stock ones) and put in Firestone bags. It's a great combo, and allows me a nice cushy ride at 10 psi - empty.

When I haul a big load, I air up the bags (with a home-brew in-cab controller) till it's level and it still rides well.

I also added Rancho 9000's and an in-cab controller. It adds one more level of control, and I think it was money well spent.

If you ever drive your truck empty, I'd suggest doing something similar - keep the stock springs, and add bags.

Tackett

Re:Air Bags in the Rear????

i have a kelderman front and rear air bag suspension in both my trucks, they're not bad either.they have a hitch / air ride assembly that remove's the rear leaf spring mount and the rear spring get's tied in to a sub-frame that hold's the bottom of the air bag.the only downfall is if you put in too much p.s.i. the air bag will stretch really far and can rub the rear springs,in turn will prematurely wear the bag out and blow. It's not bad if it blows out when it is under warranty but it is no fun when it goes out when you are loaded, I found that out the hard way.But overall kelderman is pretty good also and i'm satisfied with it's performance.Just go to www.keldermanmfg.com and check it out.
