after market cam ?
Re:after market cam ?
After pricing the components that DD uses you can clearly see the price of the camshaft is not out of line.
Call the Cummins parts house and price a marine Camshaft, a marine gear to go with it, the bolt, the retainer, a new set of tappets ( not used ) and the woodruf key.
Then add on a grinding fee.
I love my camshaft.

$1,500?
I don't think that's bad at all. After you price high performance injectors, High performance Pumps, and High Performance Turbo's. The Cam, a most critical engine component is, not unfairly priced at $1,500.
Mike,, You been talking to James lately?

JR, No...its the high nickle content, chilled ductile iron stick from Cummins. After the regrind they go through several additional processes to strengthen them even more.
The shot peening behind the number one bearing journal helps to prevent the cracking that was taking place in the older design in just stock engines. The cracks were slowly developing in this area and as time went by they increased in size until failure.
8620 Billet is not needed IMO, until the RPMs go up past 4000 and the injection pump load is increased via larger plunger and barrel assemblies, etc.
I dont plan on any 4000rpm runs although I have slipped up a few times and exceeded 4500. Its dern nice knowing the camshaft drive gear is held in place with a bolt that goes the second cam bearing journal instead of the press on type that other aftermarket camshafts use. Helical cut gears with the hypoid angle under drive conditions actually try to pry the gear off the end of the cam nose. The bolted gear stops this action. Too bad the longest leg of the right triangle (hypotenuse) is too severe on the helical cut factory gears.
Oh well Cummins got smart and went to straight cut gears on the 03 trucks..too little, too late for us P pump guys.

i haven't been talking to james, and yall must make a bunch more money than i do. 1500 bucks is more money than i spent on all my power mods. i know i don't have the money to make the big hp. heck this is my daily driver[which is down] and i don't want to throw that much at it.

Mike, Cummins has a high price on Marine parts...cam grinders for Diesels are few and far between with the knowledge to grind one the right way, get the heat treat right, etc.
The stuff cost money..Pretty much Im outta cash too for mods...gotta slow down here or I might be living with you soon LOL Oh, that would be me, 4 kids and my wife.

Re:after market cam ?
I think what I was trying to say, was, not that I've spent more money than you, or anything like that. I was just trying to say that this upgrade is in that ballpark.
A Cam upgrade is not something a 400HP truck would need. it's something a 500-600HP truck could do.
A high performance Cam is right in line with a high flow injection pump, and big turbo's.
I'm not saying that you have to have lots of fuel to make a cam work,, far from it,, but, when you have lots of fuel, that's usually when you start looking at a cam. BTW, you can pick up a Cam from Piers for about $600.
PDR cam Vs. DD cam. There IS a difference, and it's not just price.
Merrick Cummings Jr
I have no idea how you got brought you into this.
none whatsoever. Why am I even here?
As your one-liner says,,, How Do I do that?

Re:after market cam ?
Mike you are the worlds biggest cheapskate, so I know in fact that you spent less than that on all of your mods so far. However, Don is right in that there is a lot that has gone into the $1500 camshaft and it is probably a reasonable price to expect to pay for one, although there is still a good profit margin there. I am like you, we both want the $1500 camshaft for $600 or less. See if you can find us a couple whereever you come up the other smokin deals I have seen you come across.
Don, I heard you just got your cam in a few days ago. Can you comment on what it is SPECIFICALLY you like about it over what you had before. I too have been considering the cam upgrade, but cant justify it to myself yet. I would be interested in knowing what you like about how the truck drives and performes differently now that you have the cam in.
