Adjustable BOOST ELBOW

I am learning here: What is the advantage of adding an adjustable boost elbow?

What about a wastegate mod also?

Thanks,

Hal

not real sure on your truck but i just added one to mine... with my fuel i could see 45 lbs easy on boost guage which from what i read can be detremental to my stock turbo and out of its map anyway... now i can adjust my boost to a safer level(35lbs) mine just screwed into the turbo to replace the non-adjustable brass elbow. here is where i got mine...

I need to pickup one of these. I am running about 45psi on my stock turbo. I need to regulate it down to 35lbs.

These usually arent going to be used to adjust boost down. What they do is bleed off the pressure going to the wastegate actuator allowing it to build more boost.

Oh i got home and looked at the pictures. And it's a bleeder style valve like pat stated. I am just going to make a boost controller then.

Here is a link for a DIY.

Oh yeah it only cost's 12 bucks to make.

For the guys that are running 45psi with a stock turbo, you are lucky you haven't grenaded it yet. 45psi is way out of the efficiency range, might as well be adding temperature to your intake air and EGT's, but that is just my opinion.

As far as a boost elbow goes, the advantage of the elbow is so that you can restrict flow going to the wastegate actuator. Restricting this flow fools the wastegate into seeing less boost than the turbo is actually creating. Stock turbo is wastegated at around 21 psi, in return, the stock turbo will not create more than 21 psi. If you add an adjustable boost elbow, you will be able to restrict that 21 psi going to the wastegate down to lets say 10 psi. Since the wastegate is seeing only 10psi (and being as it is set at 21psi) you still have another 10psi that you can build through the turbo (giving you lets say 30) before the wastegate opens.

However, with the installation of a boost elbow, you need to install a boost fooler as well. If you do not install some sort of electronic device to fool the ECM as well, the engine will throw and overboost code and probably de-fuel itself once it sees this "over boosting".

This is an adjustable boost elbow on my stock HX35. You can see the little allen key screw inside the brass elbow on the compressor housing.

boost elbow

I will be installing an adrenaline and some stage 2 injectors hopefully this week. I think I also will need to come up with some kind of boost elbow to let the HX35 build more boost. What is in the set screw type elbow? Is it just tapped to allow a set screw to block off some of the flow? If so I should be able to make one right quick. Is the fitting to the compressor outlet 1/8NPT? Thanks.

yes you will need the elbow and a boost fooler. Not sure if your tuner already does it or not but if not you can pick one up from BD. It will plug right in line with your map senser and they are cheap!!!!

sorry I reread your post and no you will need the J hook instead of the elbow for your auto and the boost fooler

The boost elbow raises the boost pressure by REDUCING the signal to the wastegate actuator via a bleed. Basically, you are using a controlled air leak to allow the engine to build more boost than the wastegate actuator sees.

Raising the boost on an otherwise stock engine will net ZERO power and will only heat the charge air. Basically, you'll give up more than you gain.

An electronic boost fooler will also add ZERO power alone. These are most often used when injectors only are added to a truck and it's purpose is to fool the computer into thinking that the boost never exceeds stock parameters. Most aftermarket fueling boxes, programmers, ect have provisions for this computer fooler.

As mentioned, there is no way to lower boost with a boost fooler. It can only raise boost. If you are seeing very high pressures with a directly connected wastegate, you are providing more exhaust volume than the turbo can bypass around the gate. Time for a bigger housing, bigger turbo, bigger gate, ect. Most of the newer trucks use electronic controls for the wastegate, and that further complicates the issue.

Your truck has the HY35 turbo on it. It has a hard line going to the wastegate so you cant use an elbow on it. We use an Xhook or Jhook which is basically a turnbuckle that attaches to the wastegate lever. It adds tension to it delaying the opening of it. When they are cranked all the way in you can usually get another 5-8psi of boost. If you don't have a chip that does boost fooling then it would be a good idea to run a boost fooler.
