85hp nozzles and surging
85hp nozzles and surging
Installed some 85hp tips on stock injector bodies about 6 months ago. Love the power, but between idle and 1300 rpms, if I'm not extremely careful acellerating in 2nd and especially 3rd gear I get this wild bucking/surging thing. I installed a powerpuck and it helped alot but I can still easily produce the bucking. It runs perfect after 1300 rpms and idles great, just that low rpm bucking. I read about installing different thickness copper washers in 12 valves but not 24's. I probably should have had injectors pop tested but everbody said "I just screwed new tips on and installed them in truck and it runs great". And one other thing my brother had the tips on his truck first and didn't have this issue. Any ideas guys?

Usually the bucking or surging is related to a timing issue. I would say it has absolutely nothing to do with the bigger nozzles. On my 24V at about 1700-1800 rpm's that is where I get the surging. Play with your timing a little, I'm guessing you need to be a little more advance to take more fuel. Others will chime in, but I am not a 12v guy. so it's just a guess.
Sorry for not noticing the 24V part. Was reading too fast and just saw 98. My timing surging is noticeable right at about 1700-1800 rpm's. It seems to be right where the timing and fuel delivery fight each other. It is a mild annoyance right now. I usually just keep the box turned off unless I am towing something. Doesn't seem to act up when under a load. Don't know how the powerpuck may be acting for you, I have never ran one of them. Is there any timing settings on that? When doing the beta test on the Adrenaline, I got some wild ride bucking and surging. If it's real wicked, I can feel your pain.
If you are bucking with well designed tips on OEM injector bodies, you are either running low pressure from the VP44, or have wax/coke build up on the injector tips.
If the problem started right away, it is a VP problem. If the problem only started after some hours on the engine it is almost always a dirty injector tip problem. If the tips were not well designed, and giving a bad pattern, then you will get the bucking and it gets worse in colder weather.

Thanks RCW the VP is fairly fresh less than 20k, 6 of which with new tips. I beleive they are quality tips, Diesel Dynamics sounds right. I can't say the bucking changes with weather. And I noticed it imediately after install. Is there a way to check pressure from VP? Without removal and putting it on a stand.I will say my lift pump pressure never less than 13psi unless it filter change time.
