5 SPD and towing with engine mods
5 SPD and towing with engine mods
If I have this in the wrong section let me know.I am going to put a 5.9 in my Ford I have a 5 spd in it right now they are rated at 420 ftlbs the ones that come behind the 5.9 are rated at 440 or so that what I found posted.Any one tow a 5th wheel I have a 33ft toy hauler .I would like to increase the power to around 300hp .Is there any clutch concerns at this power level? Will the tranny be okay pulling this load 17,000 to 20,000 lbs CGVW? The motor I have now is okay but if I get slowed down on hills it cannot recover and I end up going up them at 35mph.I can get back up to 50 if I rev it to red line but the shift from 3rd to 4th will drop enough speed that I cannot keep pulling once in 4th.I am hoping the 5.9 will not have this problem.I also want to put in the spring kit to increase the govener limit.Does the 3 grand one allow you to have full fuel all the way up to 3 grand?I have 4.10 gears
I am looking for motors or trucks right now what is the opinion on converting a 24v to a p pump I do not want any electronics. It looks like the fuel pump boss on the side of block is just covered by a plate so you could put the 12v fuel pump on them is that right?

The cam in the 24v doesn't have the lobe for the mechanical lift pump, but an aftermarket cam can fix that. I'm quite pleased with my conversion, but if you don't have an engine yet, the 12v would be the way to go. I have a little better than $3k in the conversion, plus some extra money for the higher pressure FASS system. You could do it cheaper if you bought a 12v for parts, but then again, why dismantle a 12v just to make the 24v up to par with it? If you find a cheap 24v and a 12v that is wrecked, then it would make more sense.
The governor springs will allow the pump to fuel until its upper limit (ie, 3000 rpm), but the plate will determine how much it fuels. Running a 10 plate, it will defuel on the bottom and upper ends, while the 100 plate just defuels on the bottom. The 10 plate is regarded as a good all around plate for play and tow, but it will depend on what other mods you are running as to how hot it will get.
The NV4500 is rated to 460 ft.lbs., but its very easy to go past that. With the exception of losing 5th gear, I haven't had any real problems with it. But I also don't do any towing, so only time it feels full torque is when I'm going WOT. But the ZF5 is a different beast altogether, so I don't know what those are capable of. At 300hp, clutch would be marginal. If you're swapping the engine, put a fresh clutch on it. My Southbend has been great, but people are raving over Valair clutches as well. Valair is quite a bit less money than SB, but their products and service are on par with them from what I've seen on here.
