The 6.7L probably makes power cleaner and easier because of the high pressure injection system. Your 2001 has a different fuel delivery system.

get a 350 or 400 big cam and drop it in your truck and go from there.

You might try talking to some of the engine builders of some the top pullers.. Some are running larger cid engines.. (bigger than the 6.7) I'd start with someone like Schied's or Hasley's..
No ideas on how much are are going to be able to bore the block.. some of the pullers are running filled blocks so they can get by with a little thinner walls.. (or are sleeved bigger.)
We talked about this years ago.. just never had the time or $$$ to really get started... Good luck...

The largest I'm aware of is just shy of .400 overbore, and that's with a filled block and sleeves. Rod:stroke ratio is already way low on these engines, so instead of making it even worse with a longer stroke and shorter rod, try a stock stroke crank, longer rod, and shorter piston with a .060 overbore. Put the rest of your budget into a nice cam and headwork. There are gains to be made with a longer stroke crank, but you're going to need to put some serious bucks into rods and pistons for a setup like that. JMHO.

The thing is its not like the guy is pushing the limits of available horsepower from this sized engine, since he is only looking for 550+ HP a good set of twins with a healthy shot of fuel an he is past that while still be towable.

Just seems like the wrong place to be looking for HP. The reason turboed diesel can make such crazy hp #s in the first place are because they force air into the engine which makes it act like a much larger cubic inch engine.

If he was looking for 1550+ hp then yea lets start getting crazy an spending big money to get the engine as big as possible.

That being said its good to see someone playing outside the accepted envulope.

yes he can make the power with the 5.9 but i still think it would be way cool to see a p- pumped 6.7. would the different in a 5.9 and a 6.7 be like the preformace difference between a 350 and say a 454 or a 502?

On the 6.7, it is made up of a longer stroke and a different bore correct? What about boring it out to fit the 6.7 pistons? And I wonder how much room there is to maybe lengthen out the stroke?

Probably the cheapest way to get bigger displacement is to slam in a 350 or 400 big cam. Then the next least expensive route would be to find a wrecked 6.7 and ****** the block out of it. And lastly would be to modify your current setup. If it were me, and I wanted to mess with the hard parts, i'd do a full port and polish, bigger cam, valve springs and full firering or just an o-ring job. With just those smaller less expensive things, you could build a clean running 600 HP P-pumped cummins. Set up with a little water injection.. twins... 17* timing.....and you could pull anything you wanted to.

All that said, why not be different and just fit a CAT a motor under your hood. I bet you could get paid, sponsered etc to drive your truck all over the country to see how many miles that C-7 would go.

I say go for it man if you can get the specs and what-not, sure you can get 550rwhp on the stock bore but why follow the crowd? I tore my head off lastnight with the help of some really good buddies and I'm doing a Port and Polish, O-rings, HD springs new Valves on the head. Port out the exhaust manifold and turbine housing with "stepping" the inlets off of a gasket matched outlet and also am going to install my PDR camshaft. I'm doing all the work I can myself since this came at a bad time but if I had the money while it was apart I'd rebuild the whole thing and put in some kickin' stuff...

Are the dimensional differences between the 5.9L & 6.7L blocks strictly internal?

If so, why not swap the larger reciprocating assembly into the 5.9L block after appropriate machine work?
