4" or 5" Exhaust?? Which one?

I am thinking about a 4" or 5" exhaust. Can someone provide feedback on both. Do you go with the straight through muffler or no muffler? I want a low deep beefy sound but not too loud and too much drone...any tips appreciated!!!!!!

4" is all you NEED untill about 500hp... It should cool just fine. At stock fueling the stock exhaust is fine, you won't see more power from just an exhaust. And the muffler depends on how loud you want/can tolerate...

My neighboor has a Cheby 05' 2500 that is not too loud but deep and throaty....we can hear it inside our house when he drives by.......I tell the kids "listen, there goes BIG BOY (has a 6" lift with Toyo MT's ) that's what I am looking fer.....another neighboor has a CTD with straight pipe....sounds like an angry tractor.....too much. I want to idle low but get beefy when I step on it. Any other sugesstions?

TIA,

Tom

If you want louder, but not the "angry tractor" sound get 4" and put the muffler in backwards, that will just knock the edge off of it.

i don't know how to make a 2nd gen cummins quiet... lol.. they are just noisey beasts no matter what.. I have mine 4 inch straght piped.. and had an 04.5 that i had straight piped 4 inch.. the 04.5 was by far louder.. You might want to try a whole exhaust system from a company instead of trying to rig this deal up yourself.. BD ATS BANKS they all make mufflered exhaust systems.

I bought a 99 2500 recently and it has a 4" Silverline exhuast on it. The previous never put the muffler on. I have it, he just never installed it. It has a peice of flex hose in place of the muffler. It is pretty loud. I'm going to put the muffler on when ever I get a chance.

I just put a 5" with the muffler backwards and sounds great. And got a great deal from Rip at Source automotive. I tried both ways and liked them both but I like it loud.....Jay.

The 4" systems will generally produce a louder more crisp sound while the 5" systems will be much deeper in sound. I have ran all different styles of exhaust on my 2003, 2001 & 1996. As we speak, I am running the 5" Flo-Pro exhaust on my 03 and it has a nice deep throaty growl to it. The 4" I was running was a bit louder and had a little more bark to the exhaust.

If your looking for deep throaty sound, then try a 5" system with a high flow muffler.....that should do the trick for ya

By the way......PM "BigBRUNO4" & see what he has to say about his 5" system.....of course he is running it straight piped.....so it's deep and LOUD

He absolutely loves it...purchased it off of E-Bay for a pretty good price

Don't do away with the muffler...especially with a 5" system. Loud and with serious drone!

What they said. I like straight 4", but any straight pipe will drone badly when towing.

In the end, here's the best exhaust tip I can offer you:

I have a straight 5" doesnt drone to much, a least it doesnt bother me . But it is pretty loud. But then again I think that I have the loudest second gen engine ever made! If you are worried about getting pulled over by the popo, use a muffler. Bret

My MBRP is pretty mellow at idle and cruising but step on it and it commands attention.

Stock pipe and some hi-flow muffler on this truck and when I get on the skinny pedal I get all kinds of looks from other drivers.
How long do these aluminized pipes last in the salty northern winters? Im lookin at the MBRP 5" for the next setup.
