Is there a cheap way to get a 3000 RPM Governor Spring Kit? A buck and a quarter seems really high to me for a spring........

kind of like fuel plates, seem expensive for what you get, kind of makes you feel you didn't get your moneys worth. untill you take it for a ride.

 

If you're talking about a '93 and before, then the 3000 rpm governer spring is about $14 from Bosch, not $125.

Done it. Best thing I did for towing.

I got my new pump and POD's today, so I want to get all the goodies in it before I stick the beast in!

 

The 1st gen spring will only set you back about 15 dollars at any pump shop. Do a search in the 1st gen forum for 3200gov spring and you should find the part number. Hope this helps...

I got the spring from the local Bosch dealer. I had to quote him the part number (run a search on this site for "3000 gsk" that'll give you the number, because he had no idea what the springs are for.

"KDP (killer dowel pin) fixed" refers to the dowel pin that locates the front timing cover. Over time on certain engine years, it can vibrate free and drop into the timing gears, makes a mess - kills the engine. "Fixed" means the cover is now drilled and a bolt inserted so it can't do that.

Actually the spring is a 3200 rpm spring not a 3000 rpm spring. I don't think they make a 4000 rpm spring for the 1st gens.

The spring is terrific. I can drop out of overdrive into third, and still tow at 65 mph, at about 2800 rpm. That means I can drop down a gear and keep the same speed as I was driving in OD. If I'm not pulling anything, I have had it up to 85 mph in third at 3400 rpm. Never dared to try this with OD.

These rpm numbers may be a bit fuzzy, since with all the slippage in the transmission, rpms are hard to define. Rpms at any speed depend on the load you putting on the engine. When towing, I can vary the engine rpms by about 300 by playing with the throttle.

Yes, they do also make a 4200rpm spring for the 1st gens. The also have a 5200 rpm spring but the the spring attaches differently....not all ve pumps are the same. I researched all of this when I was looking for gov springs back in the day. I ended up going with the 4200.

I appologize, I didn't know that they made one for the VE pump on the 1st gens. I was under the impression that we shouldn't take the VE pump much above about 3400 rpm anyway, (and I think that was a quote from Piers). With all the tweaks we make to the pump, I would be concerned about overstressing the pump, and I want to keep mine for as long as possible.

Did you have to change your valve springs for 4200 rpm?

 

It would wise to do so, but I havent. I really dont take it over 3000rpm's even though I can go further. I would personally stick with a 32000 rpm spring....that should be plenty.
