271 Transfer Case Conversion Complete
271 Transfer Case Conversion Complete
Finished up swapping in a 271 transfer case into the truck Sunday night.
Actually got it up and bolted in without a jack or hoist
Everything fits and I don't think I'll have any problem with frame clearance.
On my 98, the speed sensor is in the rear axle, so that was not an issue. You 94-97 guys will have to consider that when doing this conversion.
The linkage (also different on a 98+ truck) worked out great with no tweaks needed other than adjusting the length of the rod. I had a harder time getting the stupid bushing off the metal rod from the old tcase than actually setting up the linkage for the 271.
Haven't had a chance to drive it yet because the truck is down at the driveshaft shop having some BULLETPROOF driveshafts being put in (twist-off resistant).
When I got my tcase, I also bought a slip yoke that sports 1480 u-joints. Its BIG, and has the damper as well. The old slip yoke from my 241 DLD will nearly fit INSIDE the 271's slip yoke.
I will see if I can get some pictures up tonight of the new rear driveshaft and tcase.
I do need to figure out how to get the vacumn actuator to work right.. The electrical switch seems to have a longer "nipple" on it so I don't think the mechanical setup from the old tcase has enough throw to engauge the vacumn to engauge the CAD.
Thanks CAHammer, JRAdkins, Chaz Estep, & others for your help & advice in this project.

Couldn't you just put a Posi-Lock on the CAD?? Get's rid of the vaccum junk altogether I think!!
Can't wait to see some pics...something tells me I might need to upgrade someday

That would be a good conversion..
I measured over an inch interference on the '06 271 behind a 5600 trans, to the '96 frame rail - that would put it more than 5" further rearward than a 4500 box.
Can you do a pic of the clearance on that driver's-side frame rail?
I'm still considering this - already have the new t-case, and am working out the details for a variable interface for the speedo, since installing the 5600.

Cool , thanks.
I have gotten to know Dave pretty well, and I see a lot of you on here, so ocassionaly I will ask him about your truck, we have a similar unit. (except the power)
And I don't have the stones to pull with it.

271 case
Where did you get the 271 case from I have a new 5600 that I am gonna install in my truck and was planning to rebuild the 241 DHD but now I am having second thoughts. How much more durable is the 271 case?
Correction -
The 241DHD is 10,500gvw, the 261SHD is 12,500, the 271 is 17,500
Torque input is 5555, 5677, and 7890ftlbs, resp.
Got mine new from the Dodge Boys @ ten hunnerd and twenny six bucks, lists fer twenny six fi'ty.
Go to NVGdotcom for the full specs.

Nice to see that it worked out well for you! Will the truck be ready for the next pull or what?
