2500 rear axle
Howdy, fill in your sig please.........really helps everyone help you faster...........Your rear is a D70/80 Hybrid........may be a D80 if your truck is a 5spd........Should be a 6500 or 7500 lb rating.......usually depends on if was factory equipped the 245/75 or the 265/75 tires.........either way, GVWR and GAWR's are printed on the tag on the driver's side door opening.

The truck is a 1998 24 valve 5 speed 3/4 ton. White - no bumper stickers!
I would like to find the axle rating as specified by Dana. The tag on the door only reflects the maximum combined rear tire rating. I am up grading the wheels/ tires and am interested in the axles rating independant of tires.

It was a special HD tow package option for automatic equipt trucks still a 2500hd with CTD.
You could get it but ts was like a $500 upgrade or something like that.
the 70 is a HD axle. and shares alot with the 80, carrier bearings, hubs, wheel bearing axles shafts, even the carriers interchange with mild modifications both are sufficient for 8800 applications. I even seem to think the sway bars interchange. the big difference is in the size of the pinions and the pinion bearings.
not forgetting the larger ring gear by 1/2", larger ring gear bolts and the larger cast pumpkin.
though i think dodges therory was that the automatic being a lower torque rating and also having some natural shock absorbtion built into it through the hydraulic driving would not put as much torque against the pinion and pinion bearings as the 5 speed would. thus lower cost to install and less chance of warranty returns on the dana 70 in automatic applications. and the larger pinion ect on the 5spd s to try and cut down on warranty work after thier experience (pounding they took on warranties) with the 1st gen manual trannny trucks. the 5spds were notorious for taking out bearings and pinions whereas the automatics had significantly less work done.
Very similar to how there is the std 241 t-case in CTD's and then there was the HD version with the PTO cover in others its all about options add ons and upgrades certain upgrade merit a little more strength than others as far as mopus was concerned

So...... I ordered the HD Towing package and Camper Package with mine , is there a way to tell them apart by looking at them? Does the 70 or 80 have any easy ways of telling them apart just by looking at them?

as to telling them apart if you can find a manual tranny truck and park next to it then look under your and look under the manual tranny truck. the manual trannyed truck diff casting will be round on the bottom and tapers up to the tubes almost evenly on both sides the dana 70 on the other hand uses the same diff cover as your front axle and is more of a diamond shape.

Odds are when you ordered the HD camper/towing package, you probably didnt opt for the special axle upgrade ontop of that, very few did, it was a totally seperate upgrade item that you had to specify you wanted the d80. when i was shopping around for a truck out of the hundreds i looked at i only saw two that had build sheets that showed the inclusion of the special axle upgrade on top of a HD tow package.

Was just reading through this subgect. My truck has both the factory tow package and the camper special package, so I always thought that it had the Dana 80 rear axle. But after reading this post, I looked over the build sheet the DC emailed me a few weeks ago. Your right, even with all the heavy duty options on it, it still lists the Dana 70 rear axle! My sig does not show it but I have the automaic trans. Hmmm.
