12V timing slipping
12V timing slipping
I'm working on a 95 12V 5 spd truck. redid the top end and had the cam out to remove the broken gear case. the truck had previous work but not known what was done 'cept for the plate. upon reassembling it i set it at 15 deg. ran ok but not great. owner had it a week and called saying it was running rough and smokeing white when cold. ok timing jumped. didnt seem to run right at 15 so i tryed 12.5 (stock) to see what it ran like. would hardly run. went to 16.5 and runs great. only prob. is it won't for the life of me hold there. has jumped 3 times. this has NEVER happened before to me . i've done over 50 timing jobs and had only 1 slip..any ideas? my next idea is to change the lock washer and nut, and maybe the pump gear. ( yes it is torqued to spec. 144 ft lb) cleand it all 4 times, dried it. even tried a little loc tite blue(little dab, has worked before) no burrs on shaft either.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Scott,
I use 165# on the gear. As you mentioned a new lock washer might be needed, I have seen this be a problem before. Another thought is the gear (for whatever reason) is not square on the shaft.... I have seen them torqued down only to slip due to the gear being slightly cocked. I used a larger socket than the gear nut to tap the gear and ensure it is square prior to tightening the gear nut.

I would clean the face of the gear, washer, and nut with electrical contact cleaner (no residue like brake clean) and also the threads on the shaft. Then install with a new washer, and torque it to 170 ft.-lbs. and you should be good to go.
Doug, wildbill, thanks for the input, i think both will be very helpful. the help is greaty appreciated!! Doug, What is 165? or do i know it by a different name? thanks again, Scott
Ahh, got ya now. thanks, i actually thought 144 was kinda low, i usualy use a 3/4 ratchet and just pull on it till it seems "right" went the "correct" TQ route this time and it slipped faster that ever. i will try a new washer and clean it real good like bill said w/ contact cleaner and try it again
LOL at least i'm getting faster at um...lol
Thanks for the offer Doug will keep ya in mind.

Diesel Services Group in Saskatoon put this nut on when they set my timing. I believe they torqued it to 180 ft.-lbs. There's no lockwasher required with this. It was about 12 bucks.
