12 valve upgrades

Well just bought my wife a 98 12 valve short bed w/cummins. After driving my truck(see sig) the 12er feels sloooowww. It has an auto and I want to build it up slow. Besides the gauges, what is the first serious mod to do. I only want to do it once. EX: I hooked my comp up without wire at first. If I would of bought the ez I would have to upgrade. Should it be fuel plate or maybe injectors. Hell I dont even know what injectors are available and how much you gain? Help

Re:12 valve upgrades

You have to elaborate on KDP? Also, how much power you gain with 10 or 11? What is the difference in power between the plates? Also, what injectors are available.

The KDP stands for killer dowel pin. Here is a link with more info. - http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Dowel_Pin/tab.htm

TST diesel plates. - http://www.tstproducts.com/power_kits_trial.htm

Here is a good site with lots of info.- http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/maint/2nd_Gen-12v.htm

I hope all of this helps -Anthony

Re:12 valve upgrades

Food for thought, if you don't want to do the tranny now put a #10 plate(for a manual truck) add a set of 3K Gov springs and bump the timing.......this is a nice setup and is stock auto friendly to a point.

Re:12 valve upgrades

Well, we bought the truck friday, and I couldnt take it anymore. I bought a #6 plate for it and it awakened the truck. Smokes a little more but it is nice. What is the next upgrade. The tranny is warrantied and I want more. Is it injectors? What does the spring kit do?

Re:12 valve upgrades

Ridofpwrstroke,
Hope you got gauges! A #6 can build some good heat and with no way to measure it, you're asking for trouble.
3000 GSKs will give you a more responsive throttle and will keep your Bosch P7100 from defueling so early. With the ability to deliover fuel up to 3000 rpms, you'll be getting more higher end, and it will help in the shifts when towing.
To help airflow, I just bought a Scotty II and am looking forward to installing that. Not a whole lot expected for HP gain, but I just want my truck to breathe easier.
Injectors can help give more power, but on a stock auto tranny with a #6 plate, I think you're asking for tranny woes.

Just my $.02

Is the tranny warrantied by the dealer or and after market such as DTT or ATS?
Check it out - more power = self warranty. :

Re:12 valve upgrades

I dont have gauges. Yet! This is my wifes daily cruiser so I wont get to drive it much. I talked to the dealer and he said the tranny has not been built. When it takes a crap, bring it in and buy the torque convertor and valve body and they will put it in. I say why rebuild it until it breaks. I asked a buddy who sells diesel parts and he says that the six plate should be fine with no gauges. If I am not mistaken, it brings your power level from 180hp to 250hp. Tq from 420 to 660. Does that sound right? My stock 02 put out 245.

Re:12 valve upgrades

What intake are you running? With the stock box, and filter, it can get toasty fast, and turbo spool-up is slowed.

What Exhaust? With the stock exhaust, EGT's can get high very easily, and spool-up is slow. (Straight 3" pipe will support up to 350HP)

That tranny will be toast in short order. Depends on how your wife drives it, but if she has a soft foot, I bet it won't last too long.
You will need more than just a VB/TC to properly build the tranny. There is alot of leaking you don't see going on inside that tranny. (You will be fine if you decide to stay at that HP though)
How many miles on the truck now?

There is no way to moniter high EGT. Water temperature will not begin to rise (excesivly) untill the Head Gasket has allready popped, or you've melted the head.

I'll stop my ranting.
