12 valve intake
I have a 1995 ram 2500 12 valve with 45,000 miles on it. It has been completley stock and i never even thought about modifying it. Well the other day I took out the turbo silencer ring and love the whistle and want more. So i was thinkin about an intake, which will make it louder. Can I put on a stage two and not modify anything else? They say up to 50horse, will this hurt anything if this will be the only thing i do to the truck? Thanks a lot (and by the way Im new to the forum, but have had diesel trucks forever, just never modified them).

Yep, you can do intake and exhaust mods without needing a pyrometer. However, don't expect much, if any, power increase from an intake or exhaust.
Even on a stock truck, gauges are nice. They can help you troubleshoot problems and keep a closer watch on exactly what the engine's doing.

A BHAF filter will get you by for while until you upgrade the turbo. That will add a tiny bit of air, but youll need just a little bit more fuel to make it useful.
Pyro and transmission upgrade should come before any major mods unless you want to damage something
Once you get addicted, heres what you gotta do:
Once you have those done, you need to do something with that awful stock 160hp pump.
Either upgrade to a 215 or modify a few things. It needs a cam plate, a governor spring kit (3k rpm unless you have $$$ for 60lb valve springs). Also needs some 191 delivery valves and possibly some injectors / turbo.
I found it drives like most stock trucks with just the governor spring kit and a plate in it.
Id recommend looking at goerend transmissions or DTT. Those seem to be what most folks have and they hold up real well.
Oh yeah.. and dont forget you will need to replace that trackbar up front with a better unit like a thuren or solidsteel.biz one. Youll get nasty front end shimmy on the highway once it starts wearing out.

the BHAF is a nice air box replacement filter. Great filtering media and long life. Heres a good place to grab one. Napa 42790http://fleetfilter.com/airfilters.html Sent you a PM also.

Hey turbo I have to warn you about starting these types of mods once you start doing things the way the Cummins engine responds is just unreal!I have a 95 also and only planned a couple of mods just so I could run it on grease and tow my car to the track now I can't stop! Tomorow will be my sixth mod and counting, this stuff is addictive!!

so if I went with a AFE stage two intake, I will be ok with my stock motor, and I may pick up a few horse with some turbo whistle? (i just dont want to destroy anything from lack of knowledge becasue i know a lot of upgrades require other detail like transmission work or more fuel to the motor. thanks

Welcome to the DTR Website!
The members have given you some good advice. I would add that the "AFE Stage II Cold Air Intake System" is a good unit and will give you the "turbo whistle" you are looking for without hurting your engine in anyway! IMO, another good aftermarket cold air intake system is the "Scotty II." As DTR Member "Dshiftff" said, the BHAF (Big Honkin Air Filter) is also a good inexpensive filter. I disagree with the alot of the "Increased H.P. Claims" on the cold air intake systems as I have used the AFE's, Scotty I&II's, and the BHAF on my trucks and the H.P. increases were minimal at best.
Anyway, good luck with your decision and welcome aboard!

My experience with the upgraded air intakes and exhaust system is similar to what John P mentioned. I really didn't notice any improvement due to a new exhaust manifold or 4" exhaust and only a little, if any, from the AFE intake.

Only 45,000 miles on that truck? You gotta be kidding. I personally would choose a dry filter system like the BHAF or the AEM Dryflow. I don't like oiling my air filter. I got the BHAF because it's way cheaper and does practically the same thing as any other. You're not going pick up any noticeable horsepower with just an intake. The only benefit of an intake (on a stock engine) is better filtration and nice turbo whistle. My stock air box was sucking in dirty air.
