02 cummins, straight pipe?

I just picked up an 02 cummins 4x4. My first diesel, by the way(yay!!). I was wondering about running straight pipe. I dont know that much about diesels and what you can or cant do. Can i get rid of the cat. converter and the muffler w/o check engine light coming on? Will it be too loud and annoying? Driveability? How much to run a straight pipe? I dont want to spend $600 for a 10 foot piece of bent aluminum pipe. Thanks for any help

Just go to the muffler shop and get them to replace the muffler with a pice of pipe. Cost me about $60. Sounds great too.

on my old 02 i acquired ~62" of straight aluminumized 3" OD tubing (flared to 3" ID on both sides). no catalytic converter on the 02, just a resonator and muffler. cut both of those off and install the 62" pipe. all done. loud is determined by the individual but most people will hear you for a few blocks before they see you when straight piped...i liked it and most others thought i was a school bus.

I liked my straight pipe, till I towed for a couple hours up and down hills. Time to upgrade to a 4" inch exhaust with a muffler for $300.

Me and my friend did it for his moms truck(1st Gen). It was 37 bucks for a shop to do it and with a turndown tip you cant even hear it with the windows up. BTW your truck doesent have a cat, it has a resonator. It also got the truck 3 more MPGs!!!

Straight piped my 12V - hate it. Sounds like a tractor plowing the field. A 4" exhaust is on order.

I straight piped my 02 cummins. It's nice and loud and you'll be wearing one of these when you go under a tunnel, bridge or drive by a wall

iv run straight pipe on factory exhaust and loved it. iv run a 4" downpipe with 5 feet of 5" and liked it but would have liked it better had it gone all the way out. and i have run the 4" downpipe by itself.. that was the loudest... all sounded good! but then i like the sound of a tractor!!! i meant that’s where our engines originally were!!!

I ran a Genos muffler eliminator on the stock exhaust on my 01. Just installed 4" MBRP without the muffler and love it!!

BTW...anyone looking to buy the eliminator kit? I saved it when we cut off the stock system.

I tow (10,000lb 5th wheel) with mine straight piped and I was worried at first thought the other half would complain but she never has. I usually keep the windows up at highways speeds and drop them for slower speeds, it all depends on what you think is loud. Most of the noise is behind you unless you are going through a tunnel or near buildings I love it.

It will turn heads and every campground I pull into someone has a comment and so far they have all been "that thing sounds good".
