'02 24valve tranny, performance, boost ???s
Ok fellas, I got a '02 24 valve 4x4 auto running 35s 6" stacks straight piped w/ Edge Comp, Banks Hi-Ram intake, K&N Cold Air Intake, lost silencer ring, Built tranny, billet TC, Quadzilla Boost Fooler & XL capacity tranny pan. The questions i got is 1st, even with my built tranny she wont smoke the tires, not just the 35s but it wouldnt do it to mt 33s before. Should i get a better valve body for more line pressure for the TC?? And 2nd im wanting to get some more power of her, like with injectors or stacking another chip, which would be better?? I am planning on upgrading my intercooler to help keep her cooler. And 3rd with the turbo, im wanting a little more boost and been thinking about a j-hook or a banks big head wastegate. also even with the boost fooler plugged in she will still bog down and get de-fueled like the fooler isnt there but when i check it the green light is on showimg its working properly. so give me some ideas fellas. thanks
I think, before you throw more fuel at it, maybe get a better turbo. That would help out on your EGTs as well. Right now, I would think you would have the HY35 on it. I don't think the Banks wastegate will work on an HY35. You need the j-hook on it to actually get your boost up, even with the boost fooler. With mine, I shortened the wastegate rod to get the boost up. I can get up to 30psi with it. How much boost are you getting? I think stock set up is 19-21 psi. As for spinning your tires, perhaps your gears (probably 3.55s), are holding you back?
Your problem with not being able to spin your tires is because of torque management. Its only on autos between the years of 2000-2002. Its a system the is there to protect the drive line from breakage. As for the boost issue. I dont see why you arent able to build that much boost. My turbo isnt J-hooked and i dont have a boost fooler at all. All I have is an Edge juice with attitude and I am building 41 lbs on a stock HY-35. Our turbos become very inefficient past 30 lbs but are capable of producing as much as around 40 lbs. Anything past that and you need an HX-35 which is slightly larger but lag is greater. Best bet is an HX-40 or an HE-351 off a third gen. You can get them for a fairly decent price and are a good bang for your buck on our trucks. To deal with the torque management you will need a unit from BD diesel which is called the top speed eliminator which removes top speed governer and turns of the torque management. The other way to deal with the TM is to install a Smarty but that only turns down TM not off.
Well thanks for the info fellas, what yall said helps me alot already. And as far as what i producing as boost, im not really sure. The problem is I have no idea on how to hook my gauge up, i do have a EGT and tranny temp gauge in a triple A pillar Pod. And as far as the BD top speed eliminator ill check into that for sure. Im planning on getting a bigger intercooler soon as well as the top speed eliminator and the j-hook most likely since i dont know the exact details on shortening the wastegate rod. THANKS FOR THE HELP AGAIN GUYS!!!
Best place to hook up the guage for boost is by drilling and tapping a hole in the back side of the intake horn. You can pick up the top speed eliminator for about a hundred bucks or so. I just had the same problem only a few days ago that I wasnt building over 30 lbs. It ended up I was having a computer issue with my VP-44. Best way to check for this issue is to turn your key on three times without starting the truck and on the third time leave it on. It will display your codes in the milage display on the dash for both the pump computer and the ecu. I had to replace the pump to fix the issue. Fueling has a direct relation to boost. Less fuel means less boost. What makes you want to get a bigger intercooler? The stock one should be just fine for you unless you are making well over 500 horse or so. I am on the stock one and I am somewhere in the neck of the woods of around 400-450 with no issues besides my EGT's are high due to my fueling with the small HY-35. I would have to get a bigger turbo to lower my EGT's not intercooler. Yes the intercooler would possibly help some but the turbo would help more.
well the intercooler thought was basically helping my EGTs but i guess really a bigger turbo would be better in a few ways with EGTs and more boost. And drilling and tappping my intahe horn should be simple since i have a Banks Hi-Ram, if i remeber correctly it has spots to do this. I just assumed i could put a T in a line off of my actual turbo but no luck there so ill drill and tap the Hi Ram. And yea i ordered a Top Speed elimnator from Thoroughbred Diesel last night for like $95 or so. Ill should have it in a few days and see what that does for me as far as boost and take off power. Do you remember what code your truck displayed for the VP44 failure? I have a few on there but when i looked them up they were just some BS codes. And the VP44 thats on the truck now was installed by the dealer about 4 years ago because the stock one failed me and thats not a cheap fix at all. Thanks again for info fellas this is helping me tons!!!
If I remember right I got a 1654 code. I can't remember but I think it was a 0560 code. All in all it was translated into timing issues and also a circuit issue. ie computer board. What really sucks is that the computer on top of the VP-44 is tuned to the specific pump and isn't interchangable. I got my pump for $760 plus shipping off of e-bay. It only had 5000 miles on it. The install isn't to hard. There is only one special tool you need and that is to take the pump gear off. It is around a $100 dollars. I got mine from my matco man from miller tools but snapon carries it from bluepoint also for about the same price. Some of the high rams came with a pre drilled and tapped area for just this purpose. I have been looking to do the top speed eliminator also but have been exploring my options first. I am not the type to just go into things ***** nilly. I do some research first. Let me know how easy the install is and how well it works. There is somewhere that i found maybe through edge that has an entire complete list of fault codes. I ultimitely ended up calling blue chip diesel and they comfirmed what I didn't want to hear. they are by far some of the most knowledgable people on our wacky fuel systems. If nothing else contact them. I was going back and forth between the pump and a dead pedal situation from my apps.
