I did something similar in my younger days... ran over my mothers boss' car. On purpose!

I accidentally backed into him, (not knowing who he was either), in a gas station. I got out to tell him I was sorry and would pay for whatever damages I incurred. Before I could even say "I'm sorry", he starts yelling, screaming and spewing all kinds of dirty words at me. I tried several times to tell him it was MY fault, I was sorry, I'd make it right whatever I had to do. Finally I'd had enough, got back in my truck, which was a 1979 4X4 F-350 Ford with 8" of lift and big tires, and backed OVER his hood up to the windshield. THAT shut him up! I told him "There! NOW you have something to yell about!" After we both calmed down, we had a nice chat. THEN I found out who he was. He admitted he was way in the wrong for getting so upset with me in the first place, (the gas station people called the cops because he was yelling and carrying on so long and loud), and in the end, he wouldn't take any money from me. I think he was embarrassed because of how he acted over such a trivial matter, (I broke a piece of plastic grill initially).

Why did the operator leave it like that instead of "lowering" the boom and setting the machine back down?

What happened was.........They were lowering for service and at full extension the way it was set up on counter weight it could pick 1200 lbs....problem was the cable weights were 1800 lbs worth....so as he lowered it, it got to the tipping point and it came down and hit the tip then back up then back down hard. If he had lowered the cable and then the boom he would have been ok. And yes all charts an buzzers were ignored.....young hotshot kid....Thankfully they were doing the service in a remote area of the site.

Lowering the boom wouldnt help and WAAAAAAY to many white hats saw it happen or the after effects...

Couple pics of it being set back up....
