I have the chance to buy a 2007 Yamaha YZF-R1 still in the crate well below MSRP from the local Yamaha dealer. I'm not sure if I should get it or not. It's just a toy as most motorcycles are. I want something different and fun for right now since I sold my Harley and I'm waiting to get my Ultra Classic. I'm completely undecided right now just need opinions. Yes or no?
How much experience do you have with a newer sport bike? If you're just starting out I'd reccommend a 600cc bike. I found my 06' GSX-R barely used and it goes stupid fast. I honestly can't imagine what a 1000cc bike is like, more torque I guess but my 600 scares me enough.
Whatever you do buy the proper riding gear: helmet, jacket, boots, gloves! I see way too many guys out riding in just a t-shirt, shorts and a helmet (Canadian law requires a brain bucket).

I have a 2005 Yamaha FZ1 and an '02 HD FXDL.
I gotta tell ya, the FZ is alot more fun than the HD, although I love to cruise on my HD and always will but that FZ is super fast, handles great and it's a great commuter bike.
Handles alot better than the HD.
I've taken some long trips on both bikes too.
The FZ is also alot less money to keep on the road.
Buy it, and take it easy on it until you get used to it then open it up and you'll see what I'm talking about.
A completely different bike than the HD in every respect.
Have fun and be careful.

You guys all giving opinions must be NEW to motorcycles, so NEW you neve rhad one,
any modern 600 sportbike has more then enough power to hurt you like any liter bike. So along your opinions then that one would not be good either. He said he is not new to motorcycles so he is not goin to panick when in a situation so he has throttle control.
if you want it go for it and ride it. Great bike to get on and have some fun.
For the guy who has a friend who has almost been hit and ran off the road your friend DOES NOT know how to ride. If he road defensively he would see these things coming before they happened.

talking from personal experience. WEAR YOUR GEAR!!!! i crashed at the track back in May and came out of it with just a broken ankle. for some reason, an ankle can't support 400lbs+ for any length of real time. as far as riding a sportbike(whether it's 600cc or 1300cc), respect is what ya need. All my coworkers thought i would be dead within the week when i bought my Busa, but alas, i proved em wrong. and have been since i bought it back in Aug 03. my $.02 is only cause i can't ride cruisers unless i wanna spend a LOT of money at the chiropractor. I'd say get it!! i wanted to buy an 04 R1 when it came out new. got to test ride it, but then changed my mind cause i LOVED the stump-pulling torque of the Busa. Sure, the R1 is crazy fast, but ya gotta rev it a wee bit before it starts screaming. Loved the ride. ultra smooth runner and and flickable as heck. much better canyon carver than the Busa, but thenagain, nothing like rolling the throttle and saying 'ba-bye'.
Hope ya get it and Love it.

I've been riding motorcycles for 19 years now. I've had and rode everything from dirt bikes, cruisers, and crotch rockets. I've taken all the safety courses (required by military) and I wear all the proper safety gear (also required by military). I'm only considering this because of the awesome deal. Don't worry guys, I live in little 'ole Cheyenne. It's big enough to have a decent amount of motorcycles to make people aware of them and small enough to not have traffic problems. Thanks for the concern and the input so far.
A toy like that is only justifiable if you have the cash to buy it. If you have to finance it then the sweet deal you speak of is actually quite sour.
Now, that said... if you've got the cash and have been riding for years you don't need to ask us about it. Do what makes you happy!
Personally I won't own another sport bike because I know what they were built for and our highways are not the right place for that kind of speed. As far as I'm concerned there is only one way to ride them. I've raced motocross since I was 9 and I get my thrills on the track.
When I buy another street bike it will be a cruiser with some obnoxiously loud pipes.

My brother just picked up an '07 R1...the burgandy and black!!! SHARP BIKE. So far he loves it, traded in his '05 ZX10 and said the R1 is a night and day difference in bikes.
I was going to get the R1 ( had an '02 and LOVED it ) when I bought my '06 CBR1000RR but I thought the CBR was a little more comfy for me. I'd say get it if you are comfortable with how much juice these things have.......they sure are a blast!
