Thumbs down Winter's hit the Prairies

Woke up this morning to -33C with a -43C Windchill. Ice crystals in the air. No questions about whether to plug in or not in this neck of the woods.

Yikes, thats cold. Long ago after a all night drive into Utah I stopped in Provo I think it was, jumped out to fuel up and took a big breath of 15 below air. That about killed me in itself. Then found the pumps had no automatic hook dealybober and had to hold on to fill with no gloves.
Guess its time for indoor projects???

Over here on the coast it is -5c (23F) this morning with approx. 7" of snow on the ground that has been dumped since boxing day. I actually got to hear my truck hit the 1000rpm idle as soon as it was started!
It is supposed to hit some where around -10c on sunday This makes a guy a bit worried as I have a tank full of coastal diesel that is good only to -10c. Time to look for some sort of diesel additive.

Started the truck @ -13 this morning. And were supposed to hit
-25 by the beginning of the week. Thats w/o wind-chill, and if you know anything about Great Falls, MT, you know we always have plenty of wind!-Steve

Man oh Man, that sounds cold,no that is cold, Here today in central Oklahoma 70, but wait a minute tomorrow high is only 45, , I have never lived outside of Ok,have traveled all over just never in the winter and could not imagine that kind of cold that you all have stated here, coldest I have been in is - 1 in Chicago one night, now our windshield lows have touched - degrees a few times,I assume you all are talking ambient and not windshield??,there are surley some life or death precautions you have to take to travel and live in that climate? What are a few, I am curious? Seriously tell me some? I can only imagine. Thanks and no pun intended, stay warm, Rick

Ain't no big deal here................It only takes a MAN to survive!! Seriously though, a winter survival kit is recomended. It consists of jumper cables, a candle, a blanket, some matches, and a candy bar or two. You also should not let your tank get below 1/2 in case you get stuck. Rick just come up here for the week and you will be "ejemukated".

All of the above, plus I keep a few MRE's, a hand held 2m Ham radio in addition to the radio mounted in the truck, a warm coat, a rifle w/ ammo under the back seat, shovel, hatchet, 550 cord, a strobe, good gloves, can of sterno, etc... I spend quite a bit of time in the mountains so often I have a chainsaw as well. Some of the places I hunt I may not see another human til spring, so thats the reason for the large list. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!-Steve

Like I said in a previous thread, "You Northern Folks are a Lot Tougher Then this Texas Boy". It was a record 78* here today and I loved every minute of it.

I have to toughen up quick......it's suppose to be down to about freezing by Monday night.

I hunt in Colorado most every year, and have almost frozen my bijinkers off a few times. Six above and thirty MPH wind last year.
I can handle it for a couple of weeks, then I'm ready to go home.

Stay Safe,
CR
