My son's got a wake up call today at school.
4 teens were involved in a high speed crash at lunch today. one died, one is in critical condition, two walked away.
Not a straight panel left on the 05 ford truck they were in.

Neighbors house on the other side of the hill from us burn up on Tues night. No power so they really cranked up the fireplace causing a stack fire. High winds, no water, dark. Only bright note was they thought the dog had gotten cooked but it turned up the next day. In addition to firefighters, the linemen really deserved their pay over the last three days.

Only problem is that at that age, whenever a friend or schoolmate got killed in an auto accident I still knew it couldn’t possibly happen to me.

I believe in the last month, in 3 counties that surround Birmingham, we've lost 9 teenagers to traffic deaths. The schools have been hit hard. The last cost a 16 yo male and 14 yo female their lives but the other 2 passengers in their vehicle only spent about 24 hours in the hospital. The survivors were buckled in. The male driver was ejected. He ran a stop sign.

We had a few when I was in school too, but it seems like there are more of them now. Are kids more brazen or reckless than they were when we were in school? Or are we just hearing more about the accidents because we're all so 'connected' now? One of the brain-trusts in my class drove off an open draw-bridge. On purpose. Dukes of Hazard style... "Yehaw." He didn't make it.

Morning all.

Todaty is Saturday, December 18th. Only 6 days, 16 hours 'til Christmas!

On this day in 1787 - New Jersey became the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

1865 - Slavery was abolished in the United States with the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution being ratified.

1898 - A new automobile speed record was set at 39 mph.

1903 - The Panama Canal Zone was acquired 'in perpetuity' by the U.S. for an annual rent.

1912 - The U.S. Congress prohibited the immigration of illiterate persons.

1916 - During World War I, after 10 months of fighting, the French defeated the Germans in the Battle of Verdun.

1917 - The Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. Congress.

1940 - Adolf Hitler signed a secret directive ordering preparations for a **** invasion of the Soviet Union. Operation "Barbarossa" was launched in June 1941.

1944 - The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the wartime relocation of Japanese-Americans, but also stated that undeniably loyal Americans of Japanese ancestry could not be detained.

1950 - NATO foreign ministers approved plans to defend Western Europe, including the use of nuclear weapons, if necessary.

1972 - The United States began the heaviest bombing of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. The attack ended 12 days later.

1998 - The U.S. House of Representatives began the debate on the four articles of impeachment concerning U.S. President Bill Clinton. It was only the second time in U.S. history that process had begun.

2009 - General Motors announced that it would shut down its Saab brand.

2009 - A Paris court ruled that Google was breaking French law with its policy of digitizing books and fined the company a $14,300-a-day fine until it rids its search engine of the literary extracts.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Why do they report power outages on TV?

A special weekend edition of the coffee is now ready! Get it before it all evaporates!

Your daily countdown makes me visualize a little kid who can hardly contain himself and is jumping up and down in impatience, waiting for that big day.

We can only hope and wish that next year this will be the third time.

Is it volatile? Explosive near an open flame?
