The only way I ever got it off was to clean using Windex. Clean and repeat until clear, could take several tries.

Try a bit of ammonia with the windex.

Vinegar will do a fair job of stripping away the bulk of it.

Acetone does a nice job on oily films.

I use Cooktop Creme (Ceran Glass Cleaner/Polish) for the exterior of my windshield. Haven't tried the interior, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. It cleans up my Ceran Cooktop with burned on food/grease whatever.

Another window cleaner that I've always had good luck with is Armorall's Auto Glass cleaner.

Try flippin the towel over more often or using more of them.

If using paper towels or newspaper, after a pass or two it starts to smear whats on the towel back onto the glass as the cleaner evaporates.

That's what I was going to say as well. Altho, that didn't work on the exterior of the new old van. I don't know what the previous owners put on there, but anything other than a downpour makes the wipers streak the windshield with a fog that slowly dissipates between wipes. I even tried using MEK and that didn't touch it either.

Paper towel should not be used to clean glass they use a clay filler in the fiber to bulk it up to make paper thats why when you look at news print the ink does not bleed as it use to years ago

Park the car in the drive or parkway in a nice shady spot. Sit with the wife for a while in the grass or table and let the glass cool down for a while. Make sure to have a couple of cool or cold beverages so you guys don't get miserable waiting for the thing to cool off. A Couple sammy's wont hurt either.

When it is, stand in front of the truck, about 8 - 10' in front of it and try to identify the exact center of the windshield. Have your wife or kids spray some windex on that 'center' area.

Ok, while staying focused on the center of the windshield, take the unopened cold beverage in your hand and throw it as hard as you can at the windshield. Call your insurance agent and go get a new one.

Your windshield will now look brand new!!!

I've never had any luck with ammonia or vinegar on glycol based films. Get yourself some alcohol based window cleaner like 20/20 or ClearVue. That plus plain old elbow grease will take it off. I've used paper towels but gotten better results with cotton towels.

If you ever want to remove window tint film (like you got a ticket for being too dark) the alcohol cleaner a razor blade will take the glue off too.

Absolutely the cleanest windshields you can have, inside or out - - use a non-bleaching cleanser like Bar Keepers Helper. Lay something water proof over the dash, then a big old towel and go to work. I was told this by a detailer - - it works. I use this on the outside before recoating with RainX - - sure makes them nice with no streaking. No worries about some harsh chemical messing up your dashboard.
