Why are some shooters such slobs

OK, I go to pulverize (in theory) some clay pigeons with my son this weekend, so we drive to our favorite shooting hole. It used to be clean, but now there are cardboard shell and cartridge boxes all over, shotgun shells in piles, brass cartridges matting the ground, beer and soda cans all over and the remains of all sort of targets. Why do some think that leaving this garbage is ok? If you can take something in full, a box of shells, targets, beers, etc, you should take it out empty. Do these same people leave their trash after a picnic? If not, why is it then OK to leave the junk from shooting? Lazy, inconsiderate jerks is all I can think of, can't pick up after themselves. I am about a New York minute from calling the Forest Service and ask them to close the whole area . Sorry for the rant, but had to get this off my chest.

I understand completely. We have gas field on our ranch right now and some of those workers are the messiest. We have a trashcan at the entrance, and 3 miles back at the site there is another one...but who could possibly keep trash in their car for three miles...

Some people are just unbelievable. I hate when they leave their trash all over; especially on public land.
The thing about getting the area closed off, is that even if it is closed off, the only people it will effect are the good people. The jerk-offs are not going to listen to those regulations. You can tell by the way they treat it now.
You should see Afghanistan...these people don't care at all about that. they just throw garbage everywhere. It is real nasty. I have to tell them to pick up their trash everytime we go to the range.

It's just the way the world is these days I guess. At the club I belong to the rules state "nothing but paper targets" but you still see all kinds of stuff down at the end of the range shot full of holes. The best one we found was a prescription bottle - we threw that moron out of the club.

It seems that few people have good character any more - character being defined as how you behave when you don't think anyone is watching you.

oh wow, don't even get me started!

I have a logging road that cuts across a corner of my land, and yahoos of all kinds go up there and party etc and leave trash of all kinds. Slob hunters leave messes behind and shoot near houses and barns at night, trespassing on private land.

But the one that ticked me off the most was when the timber company came in last winter to get the last of the standing timber out. I have a couple of turnouts off of their road onto my land, clearly marked "private property". I have a couple of old trucks up there on a clearing that I made. So as soon as the road building crew starts working, they are driving past my signs, onto my land and poking around in my old trucks. Then when the logging starts, the truck drivers are using my spur roads as a place to pull over and let each other pass. No problem with me, except that every truck driver, while he is paused there waiting for the other truck to pass, empties all the garbage out of his cab onto the ground, while sitting there on my land, looking at my "no trespassing" signs....

After picking up this trash a few times, I finally took a bag of it down to the timber company's office and gave it to them. "oh sorry, gosh we can't belive they would do something like that..." Didn't stop though, until they were gone.

The place where I work in the summer is a little inn/cafe/kayak tours place right on the river, and we have apartments to rent by the night. Well, this winter, we rented a couple of apartments to a logging crew from out of town for a couple of months while they were working in one of the valleys here. Those guys did the same thing, literally emptying their fast food trash and ashtrays onto the ground in the parking lot next to the trucks when they came home at night. Empty cigarette packs, cans, food wrappers, the works. Unbelievable! I went up after they were gone to look at the site where they had been working, and of course, garbage everywhere. Every empty oil bottle they used I think was scattered on the side of the road or the landings, along with hundreds of empty drink cans and fast food trash of all kinds.

See, like I said, don't even get me started!

Im not trying to justify their actions, but depending on where else they shoot, they may have grown lazy from scappers doing the cleaning for them.
At my local national forest rifle range, there is an old man (60 or so) that comes by daily and will sweep up the brass, collect cans and bottles, and generally police the area. At between $.01 and $.05/ cartridge for centerfire and salvage for everything else. he seems to think he makes enough money to pick up the trash. (or maybe he is just a good samaritian)

I have been guilty of letting trash blow away and not picking it up. I do however pick up my brass (mostly because I reload) or pick up my shotshell hulls.

Good thread. This is one thing that DRIVES ME NUTS!

There are tons of edited by admin out here in Utah that bring garbage with them (ie. bottles, bottles, TV's, and more bottles) out to public land, shoot it, then drive away and leave all the broken glass and/or garbage out there!!!

Doing it at a shooting range is dumb, but doing it out on (what would otherwise be) pristine public land is BS. To top it off these idiots procreate and then teach their poor children to do the same thing.

My dad always taught me when I was growing up to always leave the place in better condition than when you got there. Same with borrowed tools or equipment...always take it back cleaner than it was when you got it.

we have the same problem at our shooting spot. we always bring out a hefty trash bag full of other peoples junk. someone dragged out a tv and fridge to shoot it up. no wonder the cops give us heck until they see our garbage bag full.

We had a really nice dirtbike trail here that ran through some private land. Once it got popular people stated dumping their garbage, old shingles, matresses... all over the place.

For some strange reason the guy that used to tolerate the dirtbikes suddenly got a bulldozer to close off the entire place. I spoke to him and he said the bikes and the noise were fine but not the GARBAGE . A few poeple spoiled it for everyone.

Evening everybody,
Where to even start......? How about beer cans on A SHOOTING RANGE! I can't get past the lackadaisical disrespect for firearms these days! I enjoy beer, heck I'm having one as I write this but not at the range and not when I'm hunting. As far as the trash, it's a down right shame and the people that do it should themselves, be embarrassed. I do agree with the ones that say don't try and shut it down that only ruins it for the good, respectful people out there. Try first speaking with the area representatives and asking for better/more visual personnel, step the patrols up in the trouble areas. Those out in the western states are fortunate with having open/public space to do these types of hobbies; where I live we're forced to recycle, no open burning in most townships and I love a good camp fire! Don't confront these misfits, take some information down like the registration number on a vehicle, description of the vehicle/persons and pass it on to the your Law Enforcement Official and see that they follow up with it. If it goes to court "step up" and be there, judges love to see respectful people fed up. This gets under my skin for sure.
