Nope. Its all under hood mounted similar to the factory alternator.

Bugs me when I have cable slippage in the gray matter.

there are similar units for military vehicles. i know what youre talking about. its really just dedicated alternator that doesnt use a rectifier like the standard units do that power the vehicle.

Sounds like you have it under control (as usual) keep us updated on this as I am interested in the 3 phase myself..

We have to watch condensation around here in the fall/spring due to the changing temps..

Scotty,

I know that everyone on here favors diesel. But for intemitent service. The propane is the way to go. No worry about fuel going bad. Yes, diesel will go bad if you don't keep it treated. Also with infrequent use, you don't have to worry about injectors needing cleaning.

Mike I see your point, but the diesel will be getting used. It may sit for the hurricane season, but after that will go into the farm equipment and fresh diesel in the standby tank. Id say it would be emptied and filled with fresh diesel at least twice a year.

Dad has decided to go with an automatic switch instead of the manual. It will get ran/serviced regular so Im not worried about it sitting for period of time.

The major deciding factor is that we already have the diesel tanks available, and the cost of the 40kw diesel unit vs a 40kw propane unit is several thousand dollars cheaper.

Plus, its got a Cummins!

I work for Qwest as a power tech, we have all sizes of standby gensets, 12kw-1500kw. The Cummins Onan units have been less troublesome than our Deutz Kohler, Perkins Kohler units.

Some of the smaller Cummins have Kubota engines, and they seem to be very reliable. I only have 2 Cat gensets in my area(3406/400kw & 3412/600kw) other than block heaters they have also been good units.

We just recently installed 4 new Cummins Onan units, three 30kw's and one 50kw. They all have this new "tier three" programming from Cummins, been having alot of trouble codes, they always start but will not transfer, because of no output of the generator, they go to "sleep". You have to hit the e-stop, remove fuse from battery charger and disconnect the batteries to let it reset.... not exactly handy when the units over a hundred miles away. Cummins has been working with us, trying to resolve the issues, so far they have not found the cause.

Blake,

This is what I found on the Cummins site with a (as per your links specs) B3.3 tier 3 search:

http://www.everytime.cummins.com/eve...nst_tier3.page

You might e-mail the genny people to get a better set of #'s to go by..
