Where's His Sign?
Just had to share how stupid some probable junkies really are:
Man Dies Stealing Copper Wire
Fannin County sheriff's officials said a man died Saturday morning trying to steal copper wire. Reports indicate the incident happened between Randolph and Bailey, north of Highway 11. Fannin County Sheriff Kenneth Moore told First News two women and a man were trying to steal copper wire from electrical poles together. He said the man was electrocuted climbing a pole that had a transformer. Moore said the man and the two women were using all-terrain vehicles as transportation, and the two women got away. The sheriff's office is not releasing the name of the man who died. The case is still under investigation.

umm, not really, copper is one of the more desireable scrap metals right now.. I think it is paying like 70 or80 cents per pound, which it is not hard to get up 100 pounds of copper if your stealing it..
We don't use much copper pipe anymore thankfully, or the electricians and the plumbers would be going nuts.

Aluminum was $1.41 last summer, steel was .60. I turned in some siding and came back with $360 lbs of firebox for my boiler stove. They'll ususally sit on scrap metal during the winter, driving the prices up (can't imagine standing outside all day cutting steel with a torch to 2ft. lengths in the cold either). Then bust hiney about time the frost laws come on to sneak out the loads before prices start to drop.

To get the copper and/or aluminum to sell for scrap, they're stripping A/C units on existing structures (homes, commercial buildings, churches, etc.) as well as new construction wiring, plumbing, A/C units, etc. here in the Houston area right now.

My buddy's Dad and brother are electricians, and he's a broke, in debt college kid, so they made a deal that he could have all the scrap wire he would come and clean up around jobsites. I also give him all the aluminum we scrap here at the store for helping us out when he's bored!
Last Fall he took in over 1500lbs of bare copper wire he'd stripped, and almost a ton of Aluminum (pistons, junk cooler cores, housings, etc). Got like $.80/lb for the aluminum, and almost $2.00 for the copper! Worked out pretty good for him

That is true, the newer ones are copper plated zinc. The older ones, however, were solid copper. Not sure when they changed, but there are plenty of solid copper ones still in your pocket, piggy bank, chest of drawers, chash register, ash tray, etc.
