Whats the best gun safe for the money??

i want something fire resistant, and the ability to hold maybe 14 long guns. Sentry makes one that i saw, and i saw one at bass pro that was red head, but had no fire rating? Any insight will be helpful. i am looking to stay in the 300-600 dollar range.

Atwoods has a few... I think they are fire rated and pretty cheap. But what they have in stock can be hit or miss in different stores.

Actually Costco has some pretty good deals on gun safes.

If Costco was around back when I bought mine from somewhere else I would've saved some good money (at a minimum the Costco membership fees) buying it from Costco.

Here's an example:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...pnav=&cat=&s=1

Just enter "safe" in their search window and you'll see others available.

Check Bass Pro Shops.
They frequently have sales on their Gun Cabinets.
I bought this one a few months ago for ~$600.

This attractive safe is fire rated at 1200°F for 30 minutes.
Features:
Electronic lock
12-gauge steel
5-arm satin brass spoke
12 active 1" bolts
12/22 gray interior
Weight: 490 lbs.
Color: Gloss Black

It's not a true "safe" but it will keep a burgler busy for awhile trying to get in it, and at over 600 lbs loaded, they won't be walking out with it.

We don't have Costcos here.

We do have Sam's and they have a few different gun safes... didn't look at them, but I did notice when I was in there Sunday.

I shopped around and bought mine at Home Depot. It is Sentry safe and it’s fire resistant. I saw the ones at Sams and was not much different from the Sentry model and was a couple of hundred more.

Forget Sam's... In January, the safe they carried didn't have ANY fireproofing gypsum in the walls (I checked) and it had an electronic combination lock. Also, it only had 3 live-bolts on the open side and no live or dead bolt pins on the hinge side of the door...

Maybe I'm just a luddite, but I don't like electronic locks on safes. Battery corrosion, electronics failure, etc...
Mechanical locks, Just like 12v engines... Stupidly simple... wickedly reliable
If you don't have a dislike of electronic locks, the various true fire-rated safes that Academy carries is probably one of the best buys. But, what you see, is what you get.. No special orders though...

Everyone I talked to said:"Ya get whatcha pay for in gunsafes..."
Look at hinge locations, inside -vs- outside, the # of live and dead bolts securing the locked door to the frame, and fire-rating and the certifying organization...

Seriously, after shopping all around South Texas, I picked up a 32"x60"x24" Champion fire-rated safe(1350degF@60mins) from a Houston gun dealer in January that had a Gunsafe Tent Sale down here in Corpus Christi. The weather had turned very wet and nasty and he didn't want to ship them back home, so he was willing to deal.

Best thing I ever bought for the house...

I hate to say it but in the case of a house fire, a fire resistant safe is only good if it's a minor fire. I knew a guy who had his house burn to the ground (fire dept. watched from 1/2 mile off as his ammo cooked off) and all his guns were history and he had a high dollar top-of-the-line safe. Best solution is to build it into the house floor. The heat goes up and the safe has a chance to save your guns.

Just my $0.02.

I bought an american.... It weighs around 750 pounds empty and abrley fits through the doors in the house.. It took an hour to get it snaked through all the hallways to a room in the center of the house...

I saw house that was burged... the Safe was on an outside wall facing the back yard.. they cut the back wall and the floor out of the house and stole the whole safe... (was bolted to a raised floor)..

I also wanted the non electronic safe but was talked out of it by the safe company I bought it from.. His reasons ,ade to much sense not to go with the electronic lock... With a dial lock there are a few dialers out there fro about $1500 to $2000 that hook to a computer an will have the safe open usually in 4 to 8 hours... but can take up to 24 hours to run all the number combinations. Electronic lock go into lockout modes if the wrong combo is punched in more than 4 times. Usually for 15 minutes.. they are easier to open if you need to get in there..

Also make sure the safe has a shatter plate. If a thief trys to drill the face of the safe and hit the shatter plate it breaks and springs lock the bolts in place.. Altghough you then have to call the manufacturer to get it open..
but most fo teh upper line safes also have a guarentee on the safes in the case of an attempted breakin..

like was posted above you really get what you pay for in safes.. Mine ws just over $1000.00 and it is considered a mid line safe..

I have a 72X36 Cannon safe that came with a dial lock and I installed a Sargent & Greenleaf digital lock.
It was a real pain moving it into the house wear it resides. Then I drilled and anchored it to the slab floor.
I installed sonic, seismic & proximity detectors that are connected to my security system.
All I had to buy was the electronic lock as the safe was mine to pay off a debt.

I checked mine (It's always covered so I forgot the make) and it's an American Security:

http://www.amsecusa.com/

It has the manual dial and it's gotta weigh ~400-500 lbs.

I remember I paid $1100.00 for it delivered.

Comes fireproofed with bolt-holes in the floor.

The only options I now regret not getting are the inside lamp and the handgun brackets that come mounted on the inside of the door.

With those you can hang your handguns on the door.

Good info on the Cannon. Local Tractor supply carries them. I need to begin investigating. I have runout of room.

On a side subject; Do any of you use the safe heaters?

TIA - JKE

Another good brand for the fire rating is Champion. Be sure to look at the different fire ratings (temp-time) All safes are not created equal. Liberty and Champion have some of the best fire ratings for the cost of the safes.

Just another point. These aren't even safes really. Per UL, they are "residential security containers". For something to be considered a "Safe", they have to be approximately 2-5 inches thick on all sides. Most of the "safes" that are for gun storage only have 10 guage or maby 1/4" of steel on the top and sides. The doors are typically thick but thats just to give the appearence of being hard to break into. They pretty much just keep honest people honest. Any one with a sawsall or hand held grinder can get into a gun safe in less than 5 minutes.
