I'm partial to the new vinyl fence, holds up great even in the cold and its very easy to install and maintain. Just need gravel and and a post hole digger

ive got 95' of oak privacy fence.... 7ft tall..... 15 years and no rot...... if using wood posts, put a flat rock at the bottom of the hole, put post in, surround with concrete..... keeps bottom of post out of water to keep from rotting..... oh, dont pile dirt up against the bottom.... it WILL rot. Oak makes nice fencing, but expensive.

Pallets don't have posts or cedar.

I've got 200' of 6' dog eared cedar with pressure treated 4x4 posts. I have $1200.00 in materials & my labor. Fence has been up 5yrs & still looks new with all the rain we useually get here. I mix 1 gallons of stain with 2 gallons of diesel when I spray it with a garden tank sprayer. It will last 6 or 7yrs before discoloring. Then I put 1gal. of bleach to 2 gal water in the sprayer spray the fence let dry & restain. I have done this for the last 22yrs on wood fences & the fence won't rot & keeps its new look for 20+ yrs.

I think EVERYTHING is expensive in California. Heck....for $385K I can get one HECK of a house!!!

I forgot, all my fence stuff was from Home depot. I know I'll have to replace it someday, but need to block the back yard from view, then later on before I finished the fence the pitbull neighbor moved in.

Spunbearing, My dog is a mix of Rot, Lab, and Bredal (sp) Pitbull, he thinks hes a 70lb lapdog! I'll get a pic of him in my gallery also. I know what you mean about some other owners raising pitbulls, My friend had one, And really shouldn't have, but the neighbor tried to say my dog attacked his at first, till all the blood was on my carport floor, needless to say I was scared, slammed a door on my daughter, didnt get hur, just a reaction to keep her in my dad's RV, after the last hit the dog turned and looked at me, I thought this was a fight to the death! Oh well, Its a shame he keeps his dog locked outside in all kinds of weather. He also has a pure bred Rot also. The Rot is very friendly, the pitbull is "ok" with me if i'm kneeling, gets uneasy when I stand up and starting growling/barking if anything is in my hands. What a shame, its a white pitbull, really pretty too. Sorry about the off topic ness.

I bought the pre made 8' sections for $34ish posts for $5. When I made the front section piece by piece, I used 3 2x4's between each post. Of course my hand made section is holding up better than the store bought ones. When I redo the fence prolly going to use stell and weld the sections up and every so often bolt them together, and run security lights on the fence pointing into the yard also. Maybe 1 every 50'. The fence is flush with the front wall of the house, and goes down either side to the back, the fence isn't complete across the back yet. Total length about 300' give or take. It is pretty solid the yard had avout 3' of water in it and during draining it almost completely uncoverd a corner posts cement, fence never moved. So its sturdy for now. But I'm never done with anything

$7 dollars a foot for PT and Cedar? DO they pay you to fill up your truck with deisel where you live? **** I install fences on the side. Chain link runs about $5-$6 per foot, PT posts and pre made panels are $13-$25 per foot depending on what kind of panel and stick built depends on how fancy and what materials but would be close to the $25 per foot.

"My advice, if you're wanting a privacy type fence, is to use galvanized steel posts and set them in concrete. "
how would you attach the wood to the post?

Guy came by today, said $4 a foot labor, and I could buy the materials, or he would. so basically just labor, plus $75 to put a door in, and $150 to put a car gate in. he builds the fence, then cuts the gates out.

he said 8 ft posts for a 6 ft fence. is that Ok? I was thinking you had more fence in the wind, than post in the ground, esp with the wind ratings around here.

he did not seem to think we needed to do anything at the bottom of the hole, i mentioned the flat rock, or the handful of gravel to create a drain, but he said he just puts the post in, and the concrete around it.

he said Psi treated posts, and psi treated slats would last 10 years with care like you guys mentioned.

anybody else got any input before i spend my dime on your 2 cents input?

the vinyl/PVC fences can be chewed up by dogs, he is saying.

are the panels as thin as vinyl house siding? you could get in with a pocket knife.

my uncle put a PVC split rail fence up. HUGE cost. HUGE maintenance.
he sold the house to get out of washing the fence all the time, he said.
