What to do, need some input
Ok, I interview and got the job with bobcat, when I went for my final interview I was asked to fill out a mileage reimbursement form. I put 160 miles in the miles traveled box as that is how far it was round trip. This is what I was told to do. So today I get a check for 105 dollars for Doosan international(parent company of BC). One the check stub it say 10/25/09 interview-G. This was the date of my last interview with them. I know that the federal mileage rate is 55 cents, which means the check should have only been 88 dollars. What should I do, its 17 dollar difference, but if I cash it and they realize they made a mistake then I look stupid and I would feel guilty. But if I say something I feel kinda stupid too. Thoughts.

You will not look 'stupid' if you bring up an accounting error. You are honest and trustworthy. What is 'stupid' about that??? Do the right thing, tell the truth and you never have to remember what you said or did.
Of course I just got out of prison after a 15 year sentence, so take that for what it is worth.

Think outside the box......
Could they be testing your character?
Make the call and let them know.

I also vote for letting em know. Especially being a new employee, it will make ya look good. And who knows, maybe if you are honest and tell em, they'll just say keep it anyways.

Like said before, the may pay a higher mileage than the standard rate. Is this rate something you are required to know? If not, I might still call them just to ask and at least make yourself look like the responsible person. If you do not need to know the rate and don't ask about it, you can not look like an idiot for cashing the check.

Well when I was working on the rigs my company sent out a spread sheet every month that we had to fill out. When they changed the reimbursement rate they sent out an email and then sent out a new spreadsheet. They got irritated if you did not keep up to date, but they were always appreciative if you took the initiative and asked questions BEFORE you submitted any reimbursement forms so they were accurate. Accountants and accounts payable people are funny, they don't like OTHER peoples mistakes.
Msot companies won't even feel a $17 discrpenancy, however it still shows integrity to at least bring it up.
