At Waffle House this Sunday (good, not bad...)
I took my family out to breakfast before I had to go to work Sunday, and as I was sitting there, I noticed a gentleman outside having car troubles. I get up, go help him, and then come back inside. Some bikers were sitting behind me, one of the local Christian biker groups, and as they got up to leave, they spoke to my family and I, told me that was nice of me, and asked if I was a Marine. I replied yes, and one of the guys stuck out his hand, and said thanks. When I shook it, I felt money in his palm. I thanked him, but asked that he keep his money, because I am a Marine by choice, and his gratitude and loyalty to the USA was payment enough for me. (Obviously, I was very nice about it.)
He looks at me and says, "Devil Dog, you take this money and buy breakfast for your family. I know you've done without to protect your country, let me do something for you."
I thanked him, he paid his bill and left. I had a tear or two from the pride welling up inside me, I'm not ashamed to say.
Every day, I get up and put my uniform on, and am PROUD to serve my country.
Americans like him are what make me willing to die for my country, to let the legacy live on. Every day, we are surrounded by crime, hate, pain and suffering. In an ungrateful world, someone stopped and said thanks. It meant the world to me.
For all those that have gone before me and served, thank you. Your sacrifice has made it possible to raise my children in a free country.
