VW passat?

Im still lookin for a good VW forum but came across a passat the other day. Been lookin for a diesel for a while. This wasnt a diesel but was the 1.8l Turbo, Nice car none the less. had 88k on it. Its a 99. I just thought id stop and see if anyone has one, knows of any problems with them. What kind of mileage i can expect from a gasser and so on. Thanks for the help

Some of the 1.8L engines in the Passat were prone to sludge formation. If the previous owner used synthetic 5W40 and changed oil regularly it should be OK. On a side note, I had a 2002 Passat 4Motion with the 2.8L and it was a great car. I loved the way it rode and handled. I've also owned 2 Jetta TDI cars.

What would you like to know? I work at a VW dealership. The turbos only have sludge issues if the vehicle was serviced like it was suppose to be, oil change every 5k. Synthetic oil has nothing to do with the sludge issue, its lack of maintenance, plain and simple! I have customers with 150,000+ miles on these engine with no problems, they use conventional oil, no synthetic. The 99 Passat turbos have issues with a little module called the "Power Output Supply" relay. They fail, ckeng light comes on, flashes, vehicle runs rough. Some of them are having Catalytic convertor problems. Overall, the Passat is one if not the best built VW. You should see in the high 20s to low 30s on the fuel mileage. I hope this helps. Tye
