Apparently at the track, there is a big turn before the straight where the start/finish line is.
It was a big field, and as the front of the pack was coming down the field, the starter didn't throw the green, he wanted another warmup lap to get the field bunched up more. The yahoos at the back of the pack before the turn assumed they threw the green, and were hauling tail in 3rd gear when they caught up to the front of the pack that were slowing down to get the cars bunched up again.

I get a sick feeling just looking at the pics. ......

 

Not sure if I'd be madder at the guys in the back of the field for not noticing, or the idiot flagman for wanting the drivers of a bunch of vintage racers to "Bunch-Up" before giving them the green flag.
Either way it's a tragic scene.

 

What I wouldn't give for a garage full of those classics ... sure makes ya cringe seeing them all piled up like that.
