Verizon Droid??? Anyone have one yet???

Looking very seriously at the Motorola Droid as my next phone. Wondering if anyone is using it yet and what do you think?

I don't plan to get one until after the first of the year, but I am researching now. They usually have sales around Christmas so I am waiting to see if the prices come down, plus we are getting a new Verizon tower near us in January to improve reception.

Thanks for any input.

I don't know much about it, but I read that this site has a sister site that is a discussion forum for the Droid. Don't know the address, but it must be advertised here somewhere.

This is a post from another forum about a guy's experience with his new Droid over the weekend....

So my wife and I went to Baby's r Us where we spent 1 hour finding Baby Proofing stuff. One thing we wanted cost $99. Not knowing if it was a good deal, I pulled out my Droid and used ShopSavvy to scan the barcode. I determined that Sears (7 miles away) had the product for $1 cheaper, but decided it wasn't worth making the drive.

I checked MyCoupons to see if there was a coupon available -- but there wasn't.

Then we got in the car, where my pregnant wife said she had a craving for Little Caesars. We haven't been to one for about 10 years, we were starving and had no idea where to go. I pulled out the Droid and said, 'Navigate to Little Caesars' and it picked a place about 4 miles away.

On the way there, the most annoying song in the world was playing. Firefly. My wife said, "this song is so bad, i wonder who sings it." I took out the Droid, fired up Shazzam. It listened to the song and brought up the song name, the album name, and the artist.

Little Caesars was so good I was even inspired enough to update my Facebook Status (on the droid). My friends were so entertained I got four comments.

Since she is pregnant with our second, we need a new house. I downloaded an app called Block Busters (or similar) and it displays your position on a map... along with all the for-sale houses around you. It even included the suburbs of Chicago. Wherever we drove, we could see exactly what was for sale (and for how much) around our current position.

All these errands on a college football Saturday.... no worries. I was checking the scores the whole time... with a different app.

I like my phone.

So basically a 'Droid' is a hand-held computer. Correct?

Yes, in a sense. AND, this is the first phone which also had a priority on the quality of it's voice calls. The clarity is truly amazing. So it's a little bit of everything...

My wife has been talking about getting this type of phone lately and my first thought was the DROID because of Jack!

She does not know it yet but I think I will take her to Verizon the first week of December to get one. They look like a very cool phone from all the things I have read.
Also the only thing bad I have read is the slide up keyboard being off center takes getting used to. How true is that? Probably OK for my wife cuz she is only using a Razr so she has never had the experience of this type of key board.

It has taken me a little bit of time to get used to the physical keyboard on this thing. At first, I was very slow with the virtual keyboards but now I'm getting pretty quick at it. I find myself using that more often now then the physical one. I like having the choice though. It all depends on what I'm doing and how I have the phone oriented.

I never thought I would care about anything like that but you can really do some amazing stuff with the barcode software.

I have been planning for a while to get a smart phone, and have been leaning toward the iPhone, largely due to the vast amount of apps available. I haven't actually seen this new Droid yet, but it looks interesting. Is there anyone familiar with both phones that can offer a comparison?

I've got a friend who has one, and while we agree that the iphone is nice, the network of AT&T has much to be desired. I used to work for a company that was a contractor for them when they were still Cingular, and then during the merger. It was not fun dealing with them, and we had plenty of issues. I'm a little biased. I've not had nearly the amount of problems on VZW then I used to on ATT so for me, it was worth it to wait for the right phone. The call clarity on this phone for me is second to none. Application-wise, the Droid is very fast. Comparing them side by side, I'd say the only thing that's missing is the amount of apps. However, the Android app market is over 12,00 and growing exponentially since the Droid's intro.

Been checking this site, doing my banking, sending pictures and using the maps for work like crazy. The maps are awesome because they provide state road numbers AND names. That is important to me in my job. love it!!

I can even look up court dates, run someone for warrants and find DMV pictures. sweet!
